I am guessing you never served.You forgot to mention the action is really underwhelming, and the movie is mostly Hanks shouting instructions to change course, someone replying "aye aye, Captain" and they repeat them non-stop, to the point it almost seems comedic.
If Tom Hanks' name wasn't attached, it would sink like a torpedoed U boat, without a trace.
The importance of the orders was what kept them alive. Instructions are what you find in your IKEA box.
When you are at General Quaters, it's not time to discuss what you had for lunch or who you got laid with in the last port of call.
Reguardless of who was in the movie, it was accurate of what it was liked to cross the Atlantic.
BTW replying is the most important part as it tells the person that you have heard the order given to you.
As a 42 year naval vet, I myself didn't find anything comical about the movie.
