Any tech-savvy folks here?

I'm using a traditional modem with router in my house for internet. In a multi-level 4000 square foot home, the modem is set up on the main floor, with a router in the basement for signal to the home theater system. The signal in the basement is poor.
I've been informed of a 'mesh-wifi- system that I could set up that would improve the network in my house. Anyone familiar with this set up, and is it really that much better?

I installed mesh about six months ago and couldn’t be happier. I have great wifi in every corner of the house and even put one out in the garage for perfect wifi out there too. I ran a cable from the modem to the main hub which is in a corner of the house and another on the opposite corner plus one in the garage.
I couldn’t be happier with it.

Given the size of your home and the dead zone in the basement, you could try range extenders or as suggested a Mesh Network.

I've done range extenders and for the most part have been happy with the better coverage. I suppose getting a proper mesh network would have been a better choice. There is a bigger price difference with the Mesh node and additional access points. The range extender option usually requires a PC to set it up and control it while the newer mesh networks are using apps on your phone or tablet to control the system.

Given your multi level home, it sounds like a good choice to make. Checking the CNET reviews the usual players like Netgear and Linksys have mesh network products and are the higher priced vs the Amazon or Google lower cost products.

If you're using modern smart devices, there's no reason why multiple access points like repeaters wouldn't work.

Mesh is essentially multiple routers with all but one configured as repeaters. You're paying a massive premium for not having to switch networks manually. But if you have a smart phone or any modern computing device (maybe within the last 6 years or so), all you have to do is set up the repeaters, connect to each new access point once and remember it, and your phone will choose whatever emits the strongest signal.

Save yourself $400 and just buy 2 repeaters for $30 each.

If your house is closer to 6000 and have multiple cable modem access points, by all means get a mesh network.

I've heard lots of good things about mesh but it's awfully expensive. Get a set of 2 powerline adapters for $50 instead - they take advantage of your home's power outlets to setup an ethernet connection. They work great!

Yes - Very good idea.

Get the powerline adapters first. If you get sucky speed, then consider mesh or repeaters. Older houses / houses with sucky electrical wiring wont' do well.

Excellent suggestion with the powerline adapters. Will give that a shot first. Thank you.

My place has those in each of my rooms. None of my computers uses wifi. All hardline connected. No wifi at all in my house.
