Apparently MEC is being sold to an Californian company. Are they going the way of all retail stores (death by internet buying)?
For shopping I like going into stores and seeing the mechanise, why because its in the hand and you can see the quality and size. (I find it hard to shop by size online because every manufacturer has a different measurement for Regular, Large and extra-Large.)
If MEC goes will you miss it?

I won't miss it . Good quality but less than attractive pricing .

Their propension to overspend on real estate " the new headquarter and 2nd Avenue store " in Vancouver was about to bankrupt them . The Forzani group with a much bigger sales volume and revenues was run in a less than lavish headquarter . Striking difference in terms of priority between the two organizations.

Online sales are definitely a major factor nowadays.

Hate to say it because i like supporting Canadian businesses especially one with it's roots in Vancouver. But few years back, needed some outdoor gear for work, so paid the $5 member fee. Year later, bought some stuff for my bike, then that's it. I'm not an outdoors junkie, usually find what i need at Sportchek, like OP says, way more locations for convenience. Long story short, won't miss it, but hate that it's yet another Canadian company being bought out by americans.

The MEC people fetishized hasn't existed for a while. A successive chain of "profit no matter what costs" leadership ruined what MEC stood for. Their products have been of dramatically lower standards for a while now. I actually remember reading about them in my high school text books as a case study for a successful business model. So as much as I applaud local success, it's just another case of corporate greed and excess that's ruined a good idea.

I saw a news report that a Change.org petition to “save” MEC from bring sold to Kingswood had nearly 6,000 signatures. Maybe they should have started a GoFund Me drive instead.

MEC has some really nice bicycle stuff, Ridley bikes, Castelli clothes and KASK helmets. I will miss them if they fold.
