I find that when talking to someone that watches a lot of Fox news, they tend to use terms like 'liberal, socialist, left, Marxist, democratic', without having any idea what those terms actually mean, and often using those terms interchangeably as if it all means the same thing.

As in the above confusion of liberalism vs libertarianism.

Conservatism is a vague term. Someone could be fiscally conservative and liberal about societal issues like gay rights.

Pigeonholing people with one word summations is no good.
