You could be a bingo caller. Ya still get to play with balls and yell at grumpy old men. It's still somewhat related to the industry because if you listen carefully after each number you still hear, "FUCK... FUCK... FUCK..."

Sorry GBM, but being specific would compromise my anonymity here. But $1,000/day average is not that big a deal. What do you think Adobe pulls down each and every minute? I don't know the answer but I'll bet it makes a nice 'Ka-ching" sound - assuming they're profitable at the end of the day. Or Amazon's new Unbox program.

It's pretty hard to make $$'s selling hard goods on the 'net, soft goods (intellectual property) is the way to go.

Adobe is a corporation. If they tens of thousands in one day, I'd believe it. You sound like an individual who's set something up on a web site selling something people download. By your admission, it is some kind of "intellectual property".

The only people I know who make it as individuals with that kind of money on the internet are those selling porn, or links to porn, or selling something to do with gambling. If you're something other than this, and you're legit, you could give me a hint via PM. I'd be very interested in knowing. Otherwise, I'd just think you were exaggerating greatly.

Hi guys, I've just had my 28th birthday! As great as it was it was also a kick in the ass! :) I've been working as a travelling girl for many years and at last have made Vancouver my permanent home! A few of you may have seen me during my travels here, but have kept myself relatively below the radar here as I wanted to protect my identity after realizing what a small town it is! But why I post is that I am looking for a new employment and was wondering if any of you had any helpful suggestions or employment opps outside of the usual ;). I don't have much experience(why this is aggitating for me) in "normal" employment but I do have a Bachelor of Commerce and a Tesl, some screenwriting classes. I love creativity. I am a creative conservative lol. My hours could be flexible but no weekends. I also need a decent wage.. how hard is it to go from $250/hr to $12!! I am bright, well groomed and mannered.. I have stellar customer service hehe. Thank you all in advance!
J.
Creativity is relative... is this from an artistic slant? If not I might suggest you talk to a few "head-hunter" type firms - your BComm degree can lead you into an entry level analyst type pursuit... the related 'right' industry might leverage your described creativity... which first might need to come forward in "tooling" your resume to show how you've applied your time since school; that on it's own may be your first real challenge as most (all?) reputable agencies will certainly check your work related references. Good luck.

Yea, forget Real Estate if you value your weekends, especially a rookie.

Did you not manage to save any of your loot at $250/hr?

Trust me, as someone that gave his notice at work last Monday, you have to do something that you are happy doing, no matter what the money. Figure out that first.

My advice - sell something. You've been doing it "for many years" anyways so I assume you have a good personality and get on well with people. I've been in sales since finishing my BCom and have never been below $4K per month. The better you get, the bigger the tickets you'll start to sell. Then the big $$$ kicks in.

Sales people, more often than not, call their own hours and if you sell as a contractor you get great tax benefits. There are a lot of firms out there who will hire you based on personality and not experience. You just need to grind it out for a while until you become "established". Then, pick a product and go and sell it.

I could never work a 9-5 and I highly doubt you'll be wanting to do that either. Dilbert's life is terrible.

The porn market is over-saturated and on-line gambling is a wee bit frowned upon by the mighty U.S.

The fastest growing segment is customized online education, particularly those that are geared to the older, retiring consumer. Just a quick glance at the demographics speaks volumes of what the future holds.

Consider online writing courses. At $400 a course (6-8 weeks) with unlimited seats there is some pretty serious coin to be made. If one were to offer, say, 5 courses a week with an average of 30 students in each course for 8 weeks that grosses $60,000. That works out to $1,071.43 a day.

But teaching 5 classes a week is a heavy workload. I've done that and have moved on. (Oh yeah, I don't teach writing; just giving an example here.)

If I were an 28-year old SP I would work my ass off for another couple of years and really stash away the cash and research the possibilities. At $12 an hour one's options are radically reduced. Throw a kid into the formula and the sum is poverty.

In all seriousness, this is the best advice. Do what you know. Do what you do best. Work hard and save harder. In a couple of years you could open up your own business with some real start up capital.

That sounds compelling. I know of people who have done well offering online courses in how to play poker online. They don't actually host the gambling, which would put them in the gray area of the law, so all's good.

Courseware is at first a simple thing that quickly becomes a complex thing to implement. Best of luck in your endeavor, if it is indeed courseware.

So let's see if I understand this correctly. You think the best advice one can give someone who is leaving the industry is don't leave?

Sounds a little strange to me.

I was under the impression she had a child and didn't want him/her exposed to this type of environment.
Well, guess you're right. But what kind of career counselling can you expect from a bunch of perberts? Shaky at best.

everyones an expert

I'll throw in my two bits.

If I wanted to make more money than I was qualified to I'd get into money management and financial planning. The initial training is a joke and if your actually good you can rake it in. Working from your home is an option too.

I agree with the oilpatch advice, theres ways to offer services to the patch without having to actually be in the patch very often....

or you could find yourself a sugar daddy.
