Sorry if I am an ignorant American but I thought prostitution was legal in Canada. I posted on another review board in Portland and a guy said it was legal. But then I read the post about the cops knocking on his hotel door. Just want to know my rights if I have any problems. Thank you. I will post a review after my visit.

It's legal, though its legality has its boundaries (e.g., no soliciting prostitution in public places).
From what I understand (strictly based on what I've heard from few ladies), ladies need a license for it. One of the ladies told me that she was caught by cops once, and she got fined for not having a license, and they just asked dude few things (e.g., name, age, etc), and as far as she knows, no consequences for the dude. His info is likely on the report, and if someone wanted to find it, his name would come up, but it wouldn't come up on criminal record check.
Much like other illegal activities that cops look the other way (e.g., selling dime bags of weed), they know who's doing what, but they won't bother them unless they have a reason to (e.g., if they suspect the lady's running a brothel, which can be potentially harmful for those involved in it).

Asking for money in exchange for sex *in a public place* is solicitation. "Living off the avails", eg. Pimping, is illegal. Keeping of a common bawdy house, is illegal.
Actually giving someone money in exchange for sexual favors, not illegal. But negotiations have to be done in private, with the actual SP, in a place that is not kept primarily as a venue for that type of service.

I may be wrong but I believe John school is for the guys trying to pick up streetwalkers.What I don't understand is why the cops can keep busting guys and putting them in 'john school' if prostitution is legal.
soliciting for sex in a public place is illegal and will get you in john school. "car dates" might get you there as well. Get a hotel room and call a girl in and that is perfectly legal, no worries, just don't meet her in the lobby to talk about it as that is a public place. Prostitution itself is not illegal in Canada. If you are concerned about legality (or targeting by LE), the fool-proof way to engage in this hobby in Canada is as follows: Book a hotel room (takes you away from your residence). Invite an SP over to said hotel room. Enjoy. Pay. Tip. Say good night. ABSOLUTELY nothing illegal has occurred. As mentioned above, our somewhat archaic laws are to protect those that might be 'victimized' (forced) into prostitution by others (pimps, brothel owners, etc.). Hence, the distinction between prostitution and bawdy houses/living off the avails/etc. Also as mentioned above, the ambiguity of the process would be removed if the industry was self-regulated, legalized, taxed and enjoyed by all who wish to partake, following the usual applicable Criminal Code, etc. (No hiring that 13 year old down the street - that will always be wrong and illegal).
There is no political will to have this ever change. Politicians have wives, their voters do to and those wives vote.
Private incalls are not foolproof. If you are the 5th client that day (ew, but possible), she is operating a bawdy house and can be targeted. You are fine. You are caught in an illegal bawdy house and are usually sent on your merry way in exchange for evidence/testimony to convict said provider/bawdy house "owner". There is a reason most SP's will not use their private residence for clients. The hotel is still the only LEGAL way to enjoy this hobby. Not that the others are expressively illegal - they just contain a loophole or three that can be exploited by LE.
