I came across an article while doing a bit of personal research into the Iraq oil situation and its history with respect to the commodity and its links to other world powers. I like to try to keep myself as informed as possible about certain events that shape the world I live in, and occasionally I'll do shit like this. I doubt that I'm shedding any new light on anything here for anybody, I simply wanted to share the article because it is the best I've found yet that sums things up so clearly and concisely in a fairly short form.
The 3rd paragraph about Cheney in March 2001 (6 months before 9/11) is of particular interest, especially considering the current price of crude.

I haven't participated in other threads on this issue because it's very complex and most of the time posters don't know what they are talking about. But this article has some merit. I read a book called "Plan of Attack" by Bob Woodward, which I consider the definitive view on this subject, because he personally spoke to all the decision makers, including Bush.

Basically, I would suggest oil was a secondary consideration in this war. It seems to me Dick Cheney and Rumsfield were philosophically for the war and it was partially due to their involment with the previous gulf headed by Bush Sr. Add this to the chemical gassing of Kurdish citizens and it was clear that once upon a time WMD did exist. So the intellegence department (CIA) along with senior bush staff started off with the premise that they still existed, and basically when evidence was inconclusive they stuck with this assumption. When evidence was non existent they still stuck with this assumption because they felt that these weapons were simply hidden. Powell on the other hand had more practical experience and he saw the logistical problems of the war and the hazzards of attempting to occupy another country. He may also have been philosophically against the war as well. Bush was essentially on the fence regarding whether or not he should go to war and it was his senior aids who persuaded him to do so. I'm sure they all regret this decision today. Powell, was left on the outside looking in and had no option but to resign. Whatever the perceived benefits may have been, the reality is this war is essentially bankrupting the US. This was an outcome beyond the wildest dreams of Bin Laden and his cohorts.

BTW, I'm not suggesting the book "Plan of Attack" is the last word on this subject, but neither can you fully understand the dynamics involved in this decision without talking to the parties who actually made the decision to go to war.
