I'm not a real techie, but I do want to make a point. I have been on Bell and Telus in the last two years and their coverage is very poor compared to Rogers. There are or was huge holes in their service in the Tri Cities area.

Right now I'm rocking the BB Edge on Roger's and it's great. Really nice for e mail and texting.

What frequency then? Can the phones work on 2100?
At this point I'm not too sure at the frequency they plan on using, however as someone who has actually used a device on the trial network DT Vancouver I can say that it is amazingly fast. Like stupid fast. I loaded the full version of some websites faster than my CDMA Storm could load the mobile version...

I must agree that the Rodgers GSM coverage is better than the current CDMA Telus/Bell...:(

BUT I HATE RODGERS ACCOUNTING! Grrrr....

I have to resurrect this thread because I'm now in the market for a smartphone. Too many people text me more than call me, I'd like to take pics but I hate lugging a camera around, and my old cellphone doesn't cut it anymore. I'm still doing research on what these newfangled devices can do, so pardon my ignorance on them.

Must haves: full QWERTY keyboard (physical or onscreen), camera, voice and texting.
Nice to haves: internet access, especially so I check out the schedules of my favorite SPs, GPS
Looking at: Blackberry Bold 9700, HTC and other phones with the Android platform, iPhone
Currently on TELUS, so I can take advantage of one of their upgrade plans and not have to switch phone numbers.

If you know a lot of people that use bbm(Blackberry messenger) and plan on using the device for calling/calendar than go with a blackberry. If you want games/apps and plan on surfing the internet don't bother with a iphone instead get a android based phone.

OP asked about BB vs iPhone.

My $0.02

Where and how are you going to use it?

What are you going to sync to? Mac or PC?

With the exception of iPhone 4, the previous versions' battery life sucked big time. My business partner had one and had to recharge after half a day's work. Lack of a replacement battery meant you had to have a power source available all the time. iPhone's batteries are all within the case and cannot be replaced by the user.

Mac's sync great with iPhones, obviously :D. Not so great with other brands. I use a Nokia N86 8G and the BT sync with my MacBook is pathetic while it syncs fine with my Sony Desktop.

Do your friends and coworkers all use BB's? Lots of mine do and they are all on the BBM service which is free. They seem to use it a lot vs SMS which is not free.

Overall the user interface is easy on both phones. Maybe the nod goes to iPhone with its touch screen.

Make sure you have a decent data plan if you go for one of these smartphones. Otherwise the extra costs each month will really piss you off.

Another question: is it worthwhile getting an extended warranty for the smartphone if you're on a 3-year contract?

Personal use. Texting, cellphone usage, taking pics.
The internet access would be handy if I'm in a different city and I need to find an SP, don't have to haul around a laptop or use an internet cafe.

PC
My Nokia N86 8G has a 8 MP camera, works great on any 3G Network, SMS easy, Bluetooth, WiFi all included. Probably free with Rogers on a plan now. Surfing is easy on it too. Got Perb bookmarked as well as Craigslist too :D

I hate typing emails on BB's and I would get an iPad for email/surfing before I would do emails on phones ever again.

Another question: is it worthwhile getting an extended warranty for the smartphone if you're on a 3-year contract?
No.

Insurance is just another money maker for the dealer.

Always ask for a free phone first if you lose or break your existing phone.

You can always threaten to go to a competitor and the Network provider will bend over backwards to keep you.
