A woman with a hacked email lost her e-transfer after the hacker figured out her password.

It made me pause to think a password I have been using is not so secure, anymore....

Reading the article, the woman's security question is: "who is my favourite Beatle"? Apparently, you get four chances to get the password correct so it was easy for the hacker to figure out the password.

The victim incorrectly assumed her bank was at fault, when in fact they are the least responsible of all the parties. They told her who claimed the money. That's about all they could do, as eTransfer is not reversible by design.

Her best chance to recover the money was to contact the receiving bank's (TD in that case) fraud department right away, I think. They have the authority to freeze the money if it was not withdrawn yet. Decent chance, since 5-day holds on deposits are quite common.

Lacking that step, it's up to the police to investigate. There is no excuse for them not to. eTransfer is limited to Canadian banks, so there is no issue with jurisdiction. Chances are, it was a part of a larger-scale fraud worth of investigating.

I get etransfers all the time. It has a security question and you get four guesses. So it was the women's stupidity to have the sender ask an easy question. I.e.: favorite Beatle!

Her email got hacked. If your email got hacked, you've got bigger problems.

Quit using the same password for everything :(
This.
With access to an email account, you get easy access to a lot of things, especially the "I forgot my password" feature on most of the website where an account has ever been created using that email address.

And the best passwords are the one you don't remember. Use a tool like 1password or Dashlane to generate and store your passwords securely. And enable two factor authentication wherever it is supported.

Our brains can only hold so much data and information. Are you waiting for the 69 TB or 420 TB size micro hard drive, which can be implanted on where the spine meets the skull? Heck you write it down, most likely you'll miss place that item you wrote it on. Just sayin bruh...

Sooooo 1234 is not a strong password?
password - it's the most used one apparently. Who would guess?

I like using the ones generated by Mac OS - 12 random digits, caps and lower case. It's shared across all devices and saves having to write it down or put it in secret notes etc

There are so many scams out there.. I might be up against one currently too... I have a vehicle for sale currently.. my contacts, listed on the ad is either via email or txt message. I get a brief text asking about it and would I email him at *****.gmail.com... I do, and he emails back with another question, which is already answered on the website the ad is linked to. another email back... he likes the price, and tells me he wont be able to be here to test drive it, but has made arrangements for a courier... (ya right I think) But then tells he he wants to pay via paypal. Hmmm Damn sure its a scam cuz I just looked up the Telephone number he texted from... 319.... it comes back as registered in Waterloo/Ceder Falls Iowa... OK... Hey Wait a second I am very clear on the ad.. the vehicle is not running... He wont be here to test drive it?? He likes the pristine shape it is in?? He must be blind and/or stupid.. Its obvious its a scamm but I am wondering what the scam is... ??? .... I will play along still for a bit. I know this has nothing to do with escorts but does anyone have any ideas .... and hopefully this does not derail this tread, but maybe add another dimension to it.

You carry a supercomputer in your pocket with secure storage at all times. Your cellphone. Get a password manager and use a different password for everything.

He'll want to pay with a money order for the correct amount OR for more than you're asking and want you to refund the difference. I've been hit with this scam attempt a few times. I played along once, received the money order and promptly took to the bank to show them what a fake one looked like. Kept the guy on the hook for a few weeks, telling him the bank hadn't cleared the money order yet until I got tired of the game and told him I knew it was a con all along.
