Hello Health Nurse, Thanks for all your great advice and information you provide here. I was recently tested for Gonorrhea/Chlamydia and also a blood test for everything else and I forgot to ask my Doc when to expect results. I know I won't hear back about the Gon/Ch tests unless positive but will for the HIV etc regardless of it being +/-. Any ideas how long it usually takes to hear back?
Hi joebubba
At our STI clinics in Vancouver we usually have a 7 day turn around. I have heard it can take up to 2 weeks at other clinics.
The most common practice is that they will only contact you if your results are positive, this includes HIV. If all your results are negative you probably will not hear from the clinic.
Remember that they can only let you know about a positive result if they have your contact details.
At our clinics I usually recommend people to call our results lines for the results, especially if they were tested for hepatitis B. You could have a negative hepatitis B test which shows you have no immunity for hepatitis B. You should really get a hepatitis B shot but because the test was negative the clinic does not call you to get it.
I also realize that most clinics do not have a result line. They usually want you to book another appointment to get the results. Given this I can understand why most people work on the idea no news is good news.
