According to CKWX news 1130, young women are becoming hookers to pay for their tution, and wouldn't their parents be shocked to find out!

Local News Students turn to prostitution to pay for education
November 05, 2004 - 8:22 am
By: Reaon Ford

The soaring cost of higher education in BC has caused a surprising and disturbing trend among our kids. Many students are turning to the sex trade to pay for their education. Valerie Scott with Sex Professionals of Canada believes the number of student sex workers has increased dramatically over the last ten years because of high tuition fees. She's seen the number of female students working in the sex trade go from one or two in a class of 50 to as many now as five or eight. Scott explains there's more money to be made and it takes less time, which leaves more time for studies. She blames rising tuition and living costs. Tuition costs in BC have almost doubled since 2000.

That can't be true, can it?;)

If I remember correctly, some thimbledick out there exposed Felicia to her parents, right?

I only wish I'd known about this business when I was in school... Instead of working 20-25 hours a week, I could have worked one hour a week and made the same amount of money. Sheesh!

I began escorting between my thrid and fourth year of university. I required an A average, which meant I needed to spend almost all my time studying, not worrying about pulling double shifts as a waitress to fill the fridge.

:( I think it's sad that the government has messed up things so much that people are unable to pay for something as basic and needed as schooling with jobs that were once considered "student jobs".

There perbettes here may enjoy what they do, but I can bet for every one that loves her job and/or enjoys it... there at least 1 or more that hate it and despise what they do... only being in it for the money.

Having a choice and choosing it is one thing. Not having a choice and doing it because you feel you have no other option is another altogether.

That is something that no one should have to deal with.

It does, but I've met chicks at zellers making 9 skins/hr with better atitudes than hookers having to do "F" all for 200/hr.

lol

Think about what you just said and then think about what kind of clients those 'men' would attract.

Then realize that the fantasy of attracting good looking women for that is just that... a fantasy.

I met quite a few girls in the past who were in school in my pooning days. Most seemed to have a pretty good attitude, and always got good mileage out of them.

I think I saw one a few months later in the cafeteria while I was taking an evening class.

I've done it and loved it. Last year school cost me 20k. No joke. It's always nice to rely on the oldest profession as a way to propel yourself to a better tomorrow. This industry is nothing short of empowering.

Still got the goods (perky breasts, tight ass) fuckin' use it, take advantage of it before you lose it. Besides, student/SPs make better SPs in my opinion.

Sorry folks, but I'm going to have to call 'Bullshit!' here,
There are approximately 30,000 students at UBC, 20,000 at SFU, plus another 20,000 or so at the Lower Mainland university colleges. Does anyone here think there are 7000-10,000 student SPs in the Vancouver area? I think Valerie Scott's got her head up her arse.

Just my two cents worth,

Norm

I find it interesting in a society where there still isn't complete equality for the woman in the work place this seems to be one situation where the the men (the guys in college/university) are getting the short end of the stick since there isn't the same opportunity for employment

HFS
Oh I think the guys in the business are getting the same end of the stick :p

i guess to some that's the price to get ahead...or get on even ground. the cost of education is not necassarily the cost of being learned. and the road less travelled is usually less travelled for a reason. i should stop now...i think the T3's are kicking in...

Norm I'm with you on that. I think the number is close to 2000 (and that's pushing it) in the Lower Mainland. As a student and a former SP, that's not the kind of work you'd like to share with your friends and family.

Have to agree with Norm. We hear all about the "I'm just doing this to get me throught school" bit all the time. You hear the same story with strippers. I think Valerie Scott's claim is way off base. I put the number at a couple of dozen, if that.

Using rising tuition costs as a reason to become a hooker is somewhat lame.

Tuition costs are high and rising but they are not outrageous.

Ive got countless friends who payed their own way through school. Its still possible. Work parttime during the school year. 4 months of summer holidays from university is lots of time to work. Student loans can make up the difference. Add busraries and scholarships to the mix.
Its possible. Many people do it. Even without financial support from their family.

I find the students who complain and are activists are the ones who take 6 to 8 years to finish their 3 year arts degree. Use the time you spend on protests and rallies and get a fuckin job to pay for your tuition. And dont max out your loans over 8 years getting a useless degree and having no experience and then complain that you are severely in debt.

Back to the topic of escorting to pay your tuition.
Theres a big cost involved. Society will view you as a "whore" going into the future.
Wont you always be wondering if someone will recognize you or remember you from your hooking days?
10 years down the road when your married and have kids wouldnt you hate your past to come out to your family?
I would think that would make working a parttime job a little more attractive.

(This issue was also recently raised in Ontario and specifically York Univesrity)

Of course it is possible... but it sucks. Take it from someone who's been there and done that. I worked 20-25 hours a week for four straight years. Early mornings, late evenings, weekends, holidays, summers... This was in addition to a full course load, extra-curricular involvement and volunteer work, which were all mandatory for my particular program. Unfortunately I didn't qualify for much in the way of student loans, as the eligibility calculations are based on parents' income, regardless of who is actually footing the bill.

To think that I could have worked as an escort just one hour per week and made the same money I made in 25 hours! Two hours of escorting per week would have been gravy money. And I could have had over 20 more hours per week to devote to my school work, or (God-forbid) have a social life.

No, I would never knock a girl who chooses escorting as a means to pay for school. Clearly, escorting to pay for college is a matter of working smarter rather than harder... and who can fault a girl for that? :)

And society will view you as a "john." Aren't you always wondering if someone will recognize you or remember you from your hobbying? Ten weeks down the road, when you're out with your wife and kids, wouldn't you hate your secret life to come out to your family? Works both ways...

I was one of those activists that fought to lower the tuition fees in Quebec. I "lost" a year and a half to that during my computer science degree. While I was lucky enough to not have to pay for anything (thanks to my parents), all my friends had to get loans (easily over 25k). And that is Quebec where the tuition fees are the lowest in Canada. Of course you can get a "socially acceptable" job that will get you throught that, but every research on the subject shows that the more you work the worst your grade gets and I've seen a lot of people dropping out because of that.

Anyway, in the end, like everybody in the business it is matter of being comfortable with the cost/gain ratio.

BTW, the article only said sex workers, so that would include SP, strippers, Porn actresses, etc. That might include a lot more people than we think.
