I finally did one for real a few days ago.
A woman was at a diner and choking. Someone else tried to help but was not getting anywhere. The victim was very red and only making a whistling noise, blocked airway.
I could barely reach around her, she was very chubby.
Tried once, no effect. Went again really hard, wow, a big ball of rice came flying out.
Then she turned around and threw up on me.

Your good deed has not gone unnoticed and I am sure the woman is most thankful for your actions.

Congratulations on stepping up. Just be glad you didn't have to do mouth-to-mouth.

It takes a certain kind of person to step up and think quickly.....do what needs to be done, and then get barfed on as a thank you.
Good job Woods.

Another example of being "That guy" Big thumbs up WW for doing the right thing that not many would do. Fast thinking, clarity of mind and keeping your cool to remember some training you got sometime in you life and putting it to good use.

I have had the opportunity a few times to put my nursing skills in use outside of a hospital. Its easier when you have had years of training and experience but a different thing when you are just thrown into it for maybe the first time. Big hug and kiss to you woody, hope the puke didn't stain your clothes lol.

Speaking of puke, this came to mind....

She was standing up and the guy she was with was patting her back.
I only noticed when a guy at the next table said "I think that woman's in trouble".
She was red and clearly in distress. When you hear that whistling wheezing sound it is an emergency, you have to act immediately!

The guy stopped patting and did a lame Heimlich, he looked kind of...non strong? No offense intended.
I train a lot so I know I am likely a lot stronger.
First attempt failed and I thought wtf? Second was really max effort and worked. The messy part was unexpected! I was glad she was okay.
She was really really embarrassed so I just shook hands and left asap.
It was a neat experience.

So glad you was there to help her. Who knows what would have happened if you wasn't there. I wonder if restaurants have to have a first aider on sight for things like this.

I don't know what the regulations say about restaurants & first aid attendants; everyone should learn how to do a Heimlich, or an alternative method of clearing an airway. A few years ago on New Year's I had to deal with a man much bigger than me choking on a mouthful of crackers & losing consciousness while seated in an armchair I couldn't get him up & out of...no time to think, just reacted. An uppercut to the solar plexus & he coughed it up & spat it out, then opened his eyes & asked me what happened...

I've used it myself on an elderly Family member at the dinner table. I have First Aid and took over as soon as I realized the coughing and choking had stopped and the person was unable to breath in or out, and could not speak. And started to turn blue in the face. It took a few tries, and you have to be aggressive depending on the size of the person. But it works. Typically the patient will vomit once the air wave is cleared, or possibley soil themselves. It's not pretty.

It can happen to anyone, regarless of thier age. Especially if they are young or intoxicated while eating too fast and/or not chewing their food properly, and talking at the same time. You can't harm a person by trying this technique. Sometimes they will pass out if you are unsuccessful. That's another story. Regarless...you have a bystander call 911 while you are intitiating this or any other First Aid assistance.

Get your basic First Aid Course Certificate. It takes one day, and you can save a Life. Just like the OP did.

My first try failed. I was trying to squeeze.
Second attempt was a thrust using the knuckle between my thumb and wrist against her solar plexus.
When the blockage came out it was like popping a cork.

I posted to encourage others to learn it. Someone's life may be in your hands one day!
Will you save them?
