now, before the I'll-find-racism-even-when-it's-not-there fringe start aiming their flame-throwers,let me say...my work brings me in contact
with young people in Vancouver, which means youth of various ethnicities.

They assure me there's nothing wrong with the term,"halfer"
In conversation, they'll say something like "Grace, you're a halfer, where's your Mom from?
"Grace" will answer, "Philippines/Hong Kong/ Korea"whichever applies.

When I suggested some might be offended by the word, I received looks of incredulity

From my admittedly small sample, but also from rdg on Google, the great majority of Eurasians have Caucasian fathers and Asian mothers, but
that could be another thread entirely.

Vancouver is very multicultural and multi-racial and inevitably produces "mixed" partnerships with the resulting offspring.
In the downtown area, in various shopping malls, where you see groups of young people you'll see Eurasians among them,
almost always very attractive.

I'm very impressed with the open-minded attitude of the youth I'm in touch with, quite a contrast to some of the "adults"
who rant on here.

I remember the term "half-breed" referring to Metis ppl, usually shortened to "breed", not a nice term, the way it was said.

Agree with the mixed women being hotter than men.

I understand in both Thailand&Philippines the halfers are prominent on tv soap opers&commercials, as well as movies.Dunno about Korea&Japan.

I get to Seoul from time to time cuz of work.

In Itaewon, you see American GI's with Korean wives& mixed offspring,as well as many tourists.
The vendors treat them as customers, I guess, but what they privately think could be another matter.

The whole American presence in south Korea could open up a heated debate, but I hope this thread stays on Perbite's thoughts on Eurasians.

LOL, I call mine "Half-breeds" and I've found that mixed women are hot but mixed men are usually kinda weird/geeky looking.
Men lose another lottery.
Lol, I call mine "Half-breeds" as well, and it's amazing just how many people are offended by it. The Japanese I know call them "Half......." with that strange pause, which has always sounded odd to me. Mixed works too.

Only visited and never lived in Korea, but given their xenophobia and hate of the Yanks I’d say a half may not be well received.

In Japan, they are well thought of from what I could see and may even have advantages as many see them as beautiful.

***This I have been TOLD...***
In smaller communities, a single mother with a half (usually American serviceman that went back) are treated well and often helped by the town, not a looking down pity thing, but “let’s help the brave girl” thing.
They have the same advantages that most beautiful women have, the real advantage to coming from a mixed family is that such a high percentage of them end up being attractive regardless of how their parents look. My kids got lucky and ended up with a random mixture of features that worked well. Well, my daughter anyways, she's had many random offers to do modeling for kids clothing magazines, and to stand around in the background on tv shows and stuff. My wife always turns them down though. Anyways, In general it seems half-breeds are well thought of unless they speak Japanese with an accent. Then they are treated as outsiders just like any other foreigner.

Oh, and occasionally nature plays a joke on some people, switching which features it picks from each race, resulting in a fair skinned lady with sharp angled features, enormous nose, bulging eyes, and a tiny mouth. One of my friends daughters is one of these people, and I feel sorry for her.

Also, we are from a smaller community in Japan and I wouldn't say we are (or she is when i'm overseas) helped by the town. It's more like we are treated well, while being kept at arms length, and gossiped about behind our backs.

I'm asking, not arguing.

The proper term for half-Japanese is "ainoko" but more recently 'hafu' has become a colloquialism for half-asian.

I don't agree that mixed race hotties are limited to women. That's only because the OP is a hetero male and notices women more than men. Keanu Reeves is considered very attractive....there are a lot more males on the list but I can't recall them.

Even more so than eurasians is the mixing of Asian & Latin genetics in producing very attractive offspring. Ethnic diversity ensures greater genetic superiority. Keep in mind that it wsn't too long ago in human history that Italians were considered 'colored'.

Hi grusse,

It does mean foreigner:
gai-jin = outside-person
gaikoku-jin = foreign country-person

In my post above I should have said “When living in Japan” so the Gaijin meant non-Japanese (living in Japan saying “Half-breed”) and the Nihonjin meant Japanese (living in Japan saying “Mixed”).

Sorry about that, I should have been more clear.
And I’ll bet my left testicle that Sleepmonger can better school you in Japanese that I can. ;)

thx for that LIJ, I've added to my Japanese vocab, I now know about 7 words, lol.

You gotta go back to the late 1800's at the time of the building of the railways and the opening up of western North America and the industrial boom in post-civil war America. Italian immigrants came over and as cheap help they were hired by factories as scab labour. White folks referred to them as 'guineas' and 'dagoes' and most of them were put alongside the black workers (cuz no one else would work with negros). there was a huge boom in Italian immigration from 1900-1914. Most were farmers and unskilled labour. The last big wave of Italian immigration came post- WW2.

we've all pretty much taken our turn at being looked down on,

from the 'dagos' mentioned above (italy), 'portagees' (portugal), 'spicks' (originally spanish, then expanded to include latin americans), 'bohunks' (slavic nations), 'micks' (irish), 'rutabagas' (scandinavian nations), 'polacks' (poland), 'squareheads' (germany), even 'bloody-minded brits' (england)

but time and numbers eventually changed attitudes toward acceptance

now we're faced with other challenges as many immigrants are more visible due to skin colours than caucasian immigrants of the past. but you know, the barriers will get broken down. usually by folks like you and me - not by government decree. we meet immigrants in our workplaces, and one by one we learn that they basically want the same things that we do, and are willing to work hard to achieve their goals. for the most part they are here to stay, and not on some fly-by-night money-making raid, only to disappear back to their homeland with a chunk of our economy in their pockets

time and numbers

Mixed kids never have any problems dating, highly sought for something else besides another white guy or asian dude.
