City DJ a great Canadian: listeners
Fans stack voting for CBC-TV program

Tue Oct 19 2004

By Brad Oswald

DR. Norman Bethune. Louis Riel. Hal Anderson?
Nestled right near the middle of the Top 50 list on Sunday's premiere of CBC-TV's The Greatest Canadian -- at No. 34 -- was Winnipeg morning DJ Hal Anderson, thanks to a very successful on-air campaign by local radio station Power 97 FM.
Last spring, the producers of The Greatest Canadian invited CBC viewers and listeners to offer up their choices for the "greatest-ever" list that was unveiled in Sunday's show. More than 140,000 votes were cast, and more than 10,000 different names were submitted.

According to Julie Dossett, the series' manager of communications and voting, more than half the votes cast were for the names on the Top 10 list that includes Tommy Douglas, Wayne Gretzky, Terry Fox, Dr. Frederick Banting, Lester B. Pearson, Alexander Graham Bell, Pierre Trudeau, David Suzuki, Sir John A. Macdonald and Don Cherry.

Some of the lesser nominees received only a single vote; others, like Anderson, received enough (several hundred, according to Dossett) to earn them a place in the Top 50.

"We weren't surprised," said Dossett. "Back in the spring, we were really just trying to get people to nominate whomever they think is the greatest Canadian, knowing full well that some people were going to try to have some fun with it. And that's great. We think it's a riot."

Power 97 program director Lochlin Cross acknowledged that Anderson's presence on the list is the result of a well-executed prank. "We had it up on our (Power 97) website and got more than 400,000 hits for him," Cross said yesterday.

"It was a stunt, but regardless of whether people went out and created new domain names to vote multiple times, it speaks well to the fan support for Power 97."

It's an imperfect popularity contest.
#34 Hal Anderson is a Winnipeg DJ that got enough listeners to vote for him

I voted for Terry Fox. The top ten list is interesting although Don Cherry is a joke. The chosen 100 suggests that some people have great difficulty distinguishing famous (ie Avril Lavine, Shania Twain and Jim Carey) with greatness.

What a joke.

A Top Ten list of white, mostly rich men. No women, no minorities, no Aboriginals.

Don Cherry ahead of John Diefenbaker.

Pamela Anderson ahead of Roberta Bondar.

This list is a friggin disgrace.

It was a popularity contest, so it should be expected that people be on the list that really have no damn business being there.

When you look at the entire list, there is some hope for us yet. I am absolutely and gratifyingly amazed that Gen Currie made the list. I didn't think enough people in this country knew of him or his deeds to make it to the list.

Unfortunately, there are some individuals, while great public personalities and maybe even nice people, who made the list have contributed sweet fuck all to Canada. Don Cherry in top ten, sic.

Great post Grendleaxe, you nailed it.

I thought of casting my vote for TC Douglas, but I went with Terry Fox instead.

Also missing from the list were labour people. No one such as Buzz Hargrove or Bob White.

Two things from watching that clip:

First, the one-hour Terry Fox episode of the Greatest Canadian will be on tonight. It was moved to today from yesterday because of some special CBC movie. So, if you need a break from US election stuff, try to watch.

Second, with all the brutal, coiffed, empty-headed, morons in the TV news these days, it was nice to be reminded of Knowlton Nash, the former host of the National on CBC. He was a class act. I remember when he retired early because he was afraid that Peter Mansbridge would move to the US to get a frontline anchor spot. Mansbridge knew he would never get a shot on CBC as long as Nash was still going. He retired because he didn't want to risk Canada losing one of its brightest journalistic talents to the Yanks. Anyways, that clip made me think of that.

Happy viewing tonight. I'm voting for Terry Fox.
