If I have a business and buy $100 worth of goods, I'll pay my supplier $112 but will get a refund of $12 back from the government at the end of my reporting period.

Weather wise, B.C is still the best! I for one couldn't live anywhere else in Canada.
There goes the Liberals financial theory that lowering taxes stimulates the economy by putting more money into our pockets. That theory only applies when you are NOT being bribed by the federal government to help the business community out and suck more taxes out of the general public. The provincial neocons are piss poor morally.
Everyone is getting screwed by Gordon Campbell again; thats in bad way except for those elected representatives who will probably give themselves another raise.

The big surprise about the tax increase was that it was not made at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 31, just before the long weekend. I thought that the Premier usually picked no news days for bad news. Just goes to show, he is not thinking.

It means that whereever you only paid GST (as an individual) you will also pay PST.
EG haircuts, restaurant meals, some professional services (eg your accountant if you have one).
So, if you paid 1$ plus GST for a burger, you would have paid 1.05 including GST.
You will now pay $1.12 under HST.
It's a 2 billion tax transfer from business to individuals. That is why it is called revenue neutral.

You will pay more PST now because some items that have GST do not have PST as someone had mentioned before - haircuts, professional services, restaurants, to name a few but...
Our GST was reduced from 7% to 5% so it'll be close to a "wash" when you add both taxes up.
- The taxes will be spent "closer to home" - our province takes the money instead of our federal government
- It'll reduce the nightmare paperwork by half that businesses and peole that have "write-offs" have to do.
I hate taxes as much as or more than everybody else but you cannot complain about this and at the same time criticize Harper for reducing the GST.
I think the Liberals will reduce the HST to 11% to ease the tension anyway.

The Liberals seem to have a free pass in B.C. I bet if any poll was taken right now they would still have a majority of the vote. This is despite the tax change , the erasing of emails regarding the sale of B.C. Rail, etc. etc.
At what time the Premier was claiming the deficit would not be any higher than $495 million. Now I hear figures like $1.5-2.0 billion.
I'm curious as to what the Liberals would have to do to lose the support of the voters. you can't keep pointing at the NDP and say their incompetent money managers, or can they ?

you are right, that's usually the Liberals MO.
But they announced it on a heavy news day, with the Kelowna Fires and the Braidwood Report on Tasers in hope that it wouldn't get too much press...so Campbell is still pretty sneaky.
sure food is going to get more expensive, restaurant meals, hydro and phone bills, etc. But wait to you have to pay PST on new homes along with the GST.
And Harper may raise the GST if he gets re-elected to pay down the deficit. Wait for that.
Say you buy a new home for $600,000 , you'll have to 12% now or $72,000. Thanks to Campbell that is an extra $42,000.
So thank you to everyone who voted in Campbell, you got what you deserved.
