Was listening to the ceeb today and apparent the BC libs own auditor found that go employees lied under oath an actually deleted emails related to the trail of tears. Apparently the minsite responsible for I.T. (Virk) used to hold the education cabinet seat but but shuffled because the very same auditor came up with a dammING report on him a couple of years ago.

Looks like our 'most open and transparent' gov in Canada' initiative has not really been passed down to the lower echelons.

The Provincial Liberals and Federal Liberals have nothing in common but a name. They are actually more closely aligned with the Federal Conservatives.

You do know that the BC Liberal party are more or less the same people as the Federal Conservatives right? There is no relationship between the provincial Liberals and the federal Liberals at all. They have the same name but they are two completely separate organizations.

Well I'm not a big fan of the Liberals or their leader, but this kinda transcends any divide in it's misconduct.

Someone was trying to do an independent investigation into missing women, and a government employee deleted the emails in response to an information request - this is akin to someone destroying evidence to a murder.

That the employee was able to do this is a mockery of an initiative that the government very loudly announced and spent a shit ton of taxpayer money on without effect. And now neither the minister responsible ( who had previously been censured for lack of correct procedural norms ) or the premier is taking any responsibility.

You hit the nail on the head when you said "EMPLOYEE" NOT MINISTER or PREMIER.
You really think that if the person was told to delete >>>>> by an official further up the food chain that they wouldn't have been willing, or for that matter not blown the whistle ?
Employees covering their but is not an uncommon thing, its called looking out for number 1.

Actually someone did blow the whistle , the exec assistant to the the employee in question.

And although you could frame it as 'well it was just a rouge element' , how do explain the the total ineffectiveness of the much ballyhoo'd transparency initiative - the one that was supposed to make sure that such emails were not deleted? Who is responsible for that failure of process?

When I listened to the interview with Virk his take was that 'most of the deleted emails where just transitory'. In my opinion thats total bullshit - storage is so cheap these days that no email made by public employees while fulfilling their duties should be deleted. Nurses and hospitals can't do this, so why can other departments?

Also George Gretes was not just 'some low level employee' - he was assistant to Todd Stone, the transportation minister for British Columbia. This is the same as having a director in a traded company as a bad actor.

So Ms. Clark's response came today :
Premier Christy Clark says that senior staff in her office never kept any records on a number of high-profile issues because they never did any original work on the files.

The opposition had a pretty good comeback : “I know the people of British Columbia will take enormous comfort — enormous comfort — to know that not a single person making six figures working in the premier’s office ever creates a single idea,”
