Paranormal Activity

Not really a big fan of paranormal or horror stuff but I'm very happy with the performance of Paranormal Activity in the box office over the weekend. The said film which was shown in only 159 theatres grossed just over $ 7 Million. Gotta raise the roof for this one, another Blairwitch-type top grosser in the making and it hasn't had an international release yet.

Gives hope to Hollywood right now whose finances are really tight. Most studios are just making their normal allotment of movies with no additional ones. Not all will do good but hoping they would. Vancouver seems to be showing more promise as some of my friends in LA are coming here to find jobs in film and television. However, Vancouver or BC for that matter might have to offer more tax incentives to the industry as Ontario and Alberta have recently offered more tax credits to entice filmmakers to take a second look at their province. :)

Paranormal Activity only costs $ 15,000 to make, no name actors, shot in 7 days inside a house, and is giving large multi-million budgeted movies a run for their money with a shoestring marketing budget. Making people decide on the paranormal website to have the said movie shown in their city was a brilliant marketing idea. The Twitter generation also played an important PR role. Very inspiring. Another example that anyone can succeed in life. :)

The Theater was packed FULL even for the 7.40pm show on a MONDAY night. It was good. We liked it. Though a few details could have helped make it more real. Good movie though for Halloween month.

Paranormal Activity is officially the most profitable movie of all time, as in net profit. As of present time the indie movie already grossed about $ 65 Million, not a bad return for an investment of $ 15,000. This movie would now serve as a guide for buzz ( word of mouth )and viral ( social networking ) marketing strategies from now on.

Great year for Paramount Pictures and its publicly-listed mother company VIACOM. Star Trek grossed more than $ 400 Million and brought in almost $ 34 Million to the company's bottomline as marketing and distribution expenses reached almost $ 380 Million. If Paranormal reaches the $ 100 Million mark in a few weeks then it's ROI will be double that of Star Trek.

That's why if someone presents you with an idea no matter how crazy it is, just listen and do your due dilligence. You never now what it may bring. There would be no movie called Seven if this producer didn't listen to this restaurant server named Andrew Kevin Walker who persistently begged him to read his script. Or this host in Lumiere who loves to sing to her customers after bringing them to the table. One weekend, David Foster had dinner in that French restaurant and listened to her sing and told her that she wouldn't be working there again as she has a recording contract in LA by Monday. Pretty cool. :)
