I have never had an electric shaver in my life but I am thinking of getting one because I do travel a lot and I think I should have one finally because of it's convenience.

Online comments are inconclusive so far. So, which make, model is the best? Should I get only dry one or wet/dry one? Are they as good as the conventional blades?

Thanks in advance.

I’ve had many over the years, Braun, Phillips, Panasonic, etc. Braun is my preference; entry level cordless. I’ve spent a lot of money on high end models with no better results or life span. I purchase a new foil about everything 6 months or so. I shave every day and always have (40 years?). There is a bit of a technic to it so don’t give up if you don’t get a good shave right off. I have used a blade from time to time and I do not find that blades shave any closer. You can’t beat the speed of the electric and while it is possible to nick yourself it rare.
That’s just my experience.

I recommend wet/dry. I find that it takes a while to get back into using an electric if I haven't for a while and my skin tends to be irritated for a few weeks as I get used to it again. A razor-burn feeling. I definitely prefer the straight foils and not the ones with 3 round foils but that's just a personal preference; it doesn't mean you will.

Super important to change your foil... I found every 4 to 6 months does the trick. Buy a razor that had readily available replacement foils. Note the price of the razor and yearly cost of foils if you're looking at it budget wise. (Worth the convenience IMO)

It's awesome. It's not a clean shave, but that's actually better because a clean shave leads to a rash when hair comes back out. So, the lawnmower leaves it nice and short, and it's hard to accidentally cut yourself with it.
I second this. I have the lawnmower 3.0 and it leaves my hair at the perfect length and I've never nicked myself. since I started using it, my ingrown hairs have completely stopped. seems to be the best of both worlds too, many guys love a bit of hair but it's so tidy it also appeases the ones who prefer clean shaven. I also use it on my underarms :)

Be careful on the scrotum, it's not "nickproof" as advertised, he said wincing.

Oh yes. that scrotum part is the hardest (or should I say , one with the loosest skin) and the trickiest. I have had a few little accidents there.

Both of my trusty Panasonic shavers, one foil, one straight trimmer type of, not sure, maybe 10 years? just died on me so this is a timely discussion for me. I guess that is the lifetime of the old NiMH or maybe even NiCd batteries... which is actually pretty dang impressive.

I also remembered another meaty thread on electric shavers from some time ago so searched and found:
https://perb.cc/xenforo/threads/favourite-beard-trimmer.292669/#post-2139435
Which has a lot of good suggestions.

FWIW, I am one of those pretty heavy beard but sensitive skin types plus am a proud bald guy, so have adapted over the many years to shave closely and safely.
For my facial and head shaving, the only way I can get a close enough shave is via traditional razor. And since I have decades of doing this, I have covered the gamut from the old Gillette safety razors, through Bics, to this and that and have the past 6 or so years settled on Harry's as my go to for shaving with some 3 blade disposables as back ups and for the boys. I get a couple weeks out of each Harry's blade and the shave is incredibly close, no nicks, no burn, very cool feeling for hours after.

If I need a quick touch up I have used my Panasonic foil (and I agree that foil needs changing) but for me, it just doesn't get close enough. I generally use my trimmer to keep my beard down to about 1/4" length.
For Big Jim and the Twins, I use it to keep things trimmed (its a wet/dry so can do this in the shower) but for the taint and the Twins, I use a disposable and have learned as have others that turning an electric loose down there is akin to shoving glass shards into your scrotum. Just don't!!

I also got another electric some years back which has a funky foldable handle letting me run it over my back once a month to get the two annoying hair patches under the shoulder blades but that is a sidebar topic.
Anyway that's my 2bits on shaving.

For facial shave, I've used Philishave (rotary) for years. My beard grows at quite a close angle to the skin and in different directions in different parts of my face and neck. The rotary really does a better job for me. A standard straight foil, I suspect, is just fine for those where the hair sticks more straight out...

So I got myself Braun 9 series. So far I can't say I am happy. May be I am still trying to learn how to use it. It leaves lots of spots unshaved, especially harder to reach regions, e.g. middle of the neck and on the jaw near my ears! I still have to use my razor blade to clean those area up. I am sure it has nothing to do with the razor itself though.

Philips triple heads with the clipper pop up . Does the job above and below. Carefully around the boys for sure. On my third Philips of 40 years shaving , except on 5 month crap out and die remington i bought because there were no Philips available.

Totally agree—I got 3 of ‘em. One in the travel bag, one in the car, one at the mistresses….

For daily face shave, I like the Braun series 3 Clean & Renew system with which was cheap 12 yrs ago, and the stand washes out the foil when I put the shaver in there a couple times a week. Foils have lasted a couple of years using that cleaning solution, which I buy when it’s on sale.

For down below, I stand by my 20 yr old Phillips Bodygroom. Nothing I have tried even come close to this baby. Clean berries, sleek jimbo, and best of all, No knicks ma!
