I had never heard of Audrey Jensen until today when I was doing some searches and saw two letters she sent to Alberta newspapers in Feb 2003. She was upset about the House Of Commons passing Libby Davies' motion to form a committee to look into changing prostitution laws. According to her, decriminalization in Australia has been a disaster - more violence, gonorrhea, etc.
Last I heard 5 out of the 8 states and territories had changed their laws (independently at different times) to allow legal brothels, none had reversed themselves and one or two of the remaining ones were studying the idea of making the same move. Apparently they disagree with her assessment.
In one of the letters she advocated making paying for sex completely illegal, and claimed that New Zealand was discussing enacting legislation to do so. In fact New Zealand was also at the time on its way to decriminalizing the business and allowing legal brothels. One Member of Parliament, attempting a purely pre-emptive move, introduced a bill to make paying for sex illegal, but it was easily defeated.
Maybe it's good to have someone that silly working for the other side.
