I have the Sony PRS-505 ands its actually very good. It has few limitations with the stock operating system which for the most part go away with an unoffical upgrade 
. It supports PDF, TXT, RTF, DOC, LRF, LRX, ePub, JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP, MP3, AAC w/o DRM and it can take sony memory sticks up to 8 GB or SDHC cards up to 32GB. You can listen to music and read at the same time.
It uses e-ink like the kindle and the batteries last a very long time. The only downside is that it can be very hard to read in dim light but Sony sells a light that works very well with the PRS-505.
The PRS-700 is the newest version and it has faster page turns and a touch screen. But it sounds like its a bitch on because of the glare of the touch screen.
I use to read on my palm pilot but the Sony ereader is leaps and bounds better than any lcd screen.

Kindle isn't really an option in Canada. Amazon does not sell it here. You have to get a third party to ship it to you.
Connectivity is via a US network so unless you are close to the border, downloading anything is not possible (although I think you can load content through a PC).
Also this Plastic Logic device is in the pipeline possibly from Google.

Technically yes - but you have to deal with DRM (Digital Rights Management); not all downloadable content will be readable on your device.
The Kindle has the advantage of wireless connection via Sprint EVDO which allows you to to get content essentially anywhere.
If you download to an e-book reader through another computer then you should consider which vendor will provide the content you desire (assuming any of them do). Amazon wins on sheer volume of content - 240,000 vs <100,000 at the Sony ebook store.
If you are accessing "free" content then make sure the format is readable on the device - Kindle does not (directly) support PDF documents.
Just in passing, I ran across this device: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/ebook/
It only works with PDF but you get a utility to convert stuff into PDF.
