I was reading that super long rascism thread: https://perb.cc/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=34805&page=7

when I thought that in Vancouver so many people can speak Chinese anway, and T&T is also a private company that takes all the business risks.

This reminds me of all those jobs that the West were supposed to get with the new Paul Martin regime. We were supposed to get the Canadian Tourism Commission relocated (CTC).

The CTC is relocating to Vancouver in December 2005 and needed to hire extra straff - at some pretty good salaries too, many in the $75,000 to $80,000 range.

I saw their 30 job ads and 29 of them needed applicants to be bilingual in French! It was mandatory. How many French tourists can Vancouver possibly attract? How many French bilingual speakers can a job ad attract? Probably just a lowly one percent of Vancouver`s population can speak well enough to apply for those nice Federal jobs.

Just ranting here.

I agree

 tongue I agree with you 100% and I am French !

Business should be run as a business ! Business will always be dictated by supply and demand. I believe that BC by and large is visited by mostly American, Japanese and soon Chinese.

The language should be formost English since is the language of business.

As most will speculate, Chinese will be the dominant force in the world in terms of business opportunity then they should get people who are bilingual in Chinese and English not Friking French !!!!!!!!

I have no problem learning chinese which I have ! If I dont I would loose my busienss contracts and in many years of business dealing internationally I have yet come across business done in French !

So why they want to hire french speaking people when the demand is not there ? is I guess base purely on politics. As you well know business should not have any politics if they do they sure will fail as a business.

That is my gripe

politics... Canada is a "bilingual" country on paper, so the Canadian Tourism Commission should have employees that can handle both languages.

Well, there are more countries in the world tht speak French than any other language. English doesn't count of course. And Canada has two official languages. If it's a governemnt sponsered program, then the language requirements should reflect that.

Of course! I agree.

French is spoken, if only as a second language, by most people east of Saskatchewan. French is one of our official languages, and the fact that kids are not properly taught one of their official languages out here is a problem.

They did try to teach me French in school!! However, my abominable behaviour always resulted in expulsion from class. Come to think of it, that French bitch used to make me stand outside during winter!! Ontario winter, not BC winter

Some good paying comfy Federal Government jobs. :D

You will need about 80 to 90% test score to get into the government if you're an English speaker since there are so many English speakers in Vancouver.

You will need about a 40% test score if you go for one of those bilingual positions. No competition. Favoritism. English guys in Vancouver pay taxes too don't they?
