Nothing like timely bureaucratic action.

Banning a song from the airwaves, that's 25 years old.

1) as far as I can tell, the ban applies to broadcast of the song. Does not affect mp3 sales of the song. Who listens to music on the radio anymore? Most of the people I know, use mp3 players or smartphones to listen to music now.

2) the song is 25 years old! How often is this song airing on the radio these days?

Technically they ban songs all the time. Artists just get around that by making cleaner versions especially for radio so that the song can be played. Same with videos, no?

The article says the song will be played if it's edited. So how is this example any different that the hundreds of other songs that remove or edit some of their lyrics in order to be played on the radio? The only difference here is that since the song is an older one, it made it on the airs unedited but if it were a new song it would have never made it on the air to begin with and a cleaner edited version would have already been made.

I don't see anything wrong with applying current rules to older music even if these songs have played as is for 20 years. Why would current rules not apply to older songs but apply for new ones only? Makes no sense.. :)

Yeah they can edit it, but this decision seems heavy-handed for a song that's been on the air for 25 years.

On the bright side, this will increase sales of Dire Straits music!

More so, is the fact that this came about by a mere ONE person from Nova Scotia complaining about it. On the one hand I can understand certain view points. But my immediate reaction is grow some think skin and stop being overly sensitive and righteous. And one person... that's a but bloody much. Rings of fascism rather than free speech.

I think they just have to do an edit...meh, non issue. The song will still get played, minus a few words.

Really, 25 years, when does a song become folk tradition and untouchable?! ( i don't think that i have ever used double punctuation at the end of a statement).
The tight assed bureaucrats that did this have a natural place as monitors on an unnamed recommendation board.
I agree totally with what Prospero says, and wish to add ' when are are we going to get rid of these facist ***** that rule our country and impose their thinking on a free land'.....red chicas

Gays have been protesting "Money for Nothing" for years, to the point where Mark Knopfler already changed the word "faggot" to "queenie" whenever he performs the song live. I wonder if they will ban that live version as well. The P.C.-ness in our society really gets to be a joke sometimes.

The gay community will not be happy until everyone is gay like them.

They are just as intollerant as Nazi's & conservative Christians.

If that's the case then he and the band can always re-release the song with the replaced word. I'm sure today's digital technology can make it happen without having to re-record the entire song.

barry goldwater, ex-US politician, said, "it's time america realized that there is no gay exemption in the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in the declaration of independence."

that sword cuts two ways: 1. we straights are not exempted from respecting their rights, and 2. the gays are not exempted from respecting our rights

but then we don't live in america

we live in a country where another one of barry goldwater's comments might be more a propo, "remember that a government big enough to give you everything you want is also big enough to take away everything you have."

But LAZY people love big gubment cowboy!

Give something to a lazy person & they will ask if that is all you have to give.

Take something from a lazy person & they will do nothing to get it back but complain to anyone who tries to help them about how unfair society is.

Simple solution is to kill all the lazy people!

Alan Cross reports on ExploreMusic.com that "what with all the hoopla of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council ruling on the unworthiness of Dire Straits Money for Nothing, digital downloads of that track went from 167 last week to about 2,700 this week. That number represents a full 10% of all downloads of that song since tracking began in February 2005. Meanwhile, Brothers in Arms, the album from whence the song came, saw its digital sales spike 406%. It’s now the fifth-best selling catalogue album in the nation."

You are absolutely correct.

I get along great with the gay people I know. If I however, disagree with them as I have over this song they treat me like the enemy.

I did point out that there is LOTS of literature by the masters who have denigrated gay people in their works. Not one complaint that I know of to any library about Shakespeare.
