Hi All,
R.R. here, does anyone know what employers actually look for when you fill out a Criminal Background Check? I mean you check off four boxes, but what happens when one of the boxes comes back Yes? Is further supplementary information provided to your employer with that Yes box being ticked? Do employers only care for the box in which you have been convicted? Anyone ever have their employer ask for more info?
Thanks in advance,
R.R.

Totally depends on what field you are in. They may request more info, as some charges may seem minor, or major in title, but after an explanation may then seem the opposite.

As noted above, it depends on what field your in.Generally, they will just want to know whether you have a criminal record or not. Depending on your field, any crim record precludes you from going any further. Other fields will vary on the kind of crim record you have. If it's something minor, such as a simple drug possession conviction, it's usually not a big deal. You may be questioned on it or not, but you can usually bullshit your way through it.. "I was young & stupid, etc" If the field is something in any way connected to the criminal justice field, a crim record search is just the starting point. They will run your name through cpic (canadian police info system) as well. ie any domestic disputes, unpaid traffic tickets, questioned by a cop at 3 am under suspicious circumstances, etc.

Open File?

The last question on the background check had to do with if you had an open file? Does this mean like in the case of a car theft you reported it and the file is then open?

if you dont mind me asking what kind of job are you applying for? some jobs also do an enhanced security clearance, basically saying if you associate with gang members and so forth ur fucked.....or if they suspect you of something ur fucked again.....basically they give you no chance to better yourself so even if someone with a shady past wants to rehabilate themselves they leave you with little choices..... what they dont know is that these so called "gangsters" fuckk around outside of work and dont cause anything at work..............

No problem it is for an investment company so I can appreciate their level of concern but do they really care that a file is opened? even if you aren't or haven't been convicted, or you are the victim?

If its for anything in the financial industry, they want to know about anything that may affect their insurance, such as crimes of dishonesty (fraud, theft etc).

If it's in the financial industry, then what they're interested in is whether or not you're bondable. If a file has been opened, then they will definitely care about it (unless you're the victim), and they probably won't hire you until such time as the file is closed with you being cleared.

2 out of 4?

Thanks all for the very valuable info. Anybody know if just 2 out of the 4 boxes checked in the criminal background check can be reported instead of all 4 boxes to the employer? So for example "never been convicted of a crime" and "never been accused of a crime" be sent to my employer instead of with "do you have a file opened" and the other box?

Dude, you're confusing the fuck out of me!

Having said that, the criminal justice system in Canada is multifaceted and complex. I'll give you that much!

It's designed to coerce you into seeking professional help, if you can pay for it.

My friend, you need to "talk($)" to a cop or a criminal lawyer.
