BOSTON -- Online classified site Craigslist will replace its “erotic services” ads with a new adult category “to bar flagrant prostitution and porn,” the Connecticut attorney general’s office said on Wednesday.

Craigslist’s sex-service listings have faced intense scrutiny following the April 14 murder of 25-year-old masseuse Julissa Brisman, who advertised on Craigslist in Boston. Philip Markoff, a 23-year-old Boston University medical student, was charged with killing Brisman and with attacks on two other women he met through Craigslist.

Officials from Craigslist were not immediately available to comment.

The “erotic services” section will end within seven days and be replaced with a new section called “adult services” where every advertisement will be manually reviewed by Craigslist staff, Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said in a statement.

In April, Blumenthal had asked Craigslist officials to eliminate photographs in the “erotic services” and similar sections of the site, hire staff to screen ads that blatantly violate Craigslist rules and offer incentives for people who flag and report prostitution advertisements.

Craigslist informed him of the changes on Tuesday night, Blumenthal said.

Craigslist, a 14-year-old online bazaar that generates more than 20 billion page views per month in 50 countries with a staff of just 28 people, is partially owned by online auctioneer eBay, which bought 25 percent in 2004.

Along with its free listings for just about anything -- from apartments to furniture, jobs and cars -- San Francisco-based Craigslist.org provides one of the largest and most controversial sex-service listings.

“We will be monitoring closely to make sure that this measure is more than a name change from erotic to adult and that the manual blocking is tough and effective to scrub prostitution and pornography,” said Blumenthal, who has led a task force with other attorneys general on Craigslist.

Tabloids dubbed Markoff “the Craigslist killer.”

The murder followed the killing of George Weber, a New York reporter knifed to death after responding to a personal ad he placed on Craigslist in March, and the early-April sentencing of Michael Anderson, a Minnesota man convicted of killing a woman who responded to a babysitting ad.

The Craigslist measures could set a precedent for similar sites, Blumenthal said.

“Closing the erotic services section -- a blatant Internet brothel -- should lead to other blocking and screening measures, and set a model for other sites, if Craigslist keeps its word,” Mr. Blumenthal said.

You could see it coming. I wonder what will be allowable under the "Adult Services" section. More acronyms?
If it wasn't for CL I wouldn't have discovered Perb and I would still be having less than satisfying experiences with over priced SP's. What did we ever do before the internet...

Lemme tell u what's fucked about this. It's way easier to trace someone online than it is to find someone that uses a local arts weekly to find their next victim. The net always leaves a trail. I"m an IT dude..with a whole bunch of years in IT security

Just the system kissing America's backward ass.
Well, it is an American company.

Start up your own site. Canadian law would provide a bit more wiggle room. Better yet, move somewhere like Holland or Thailand. If it's not based in the USA, the American gov't will have less direct control.

Something's gonna spring up in CL's place, you might as well be the one to make a few million. :D

Yep, someone will man, but you'd think the LE dudes would want a place to "watch".

I love America man, but sometimes it's the stupidest fuckin country on earth.
Kinda like an oversized retarded brother. ;)

Frankly, I would think LE would be grateful to have the ladies moving off the streets. Actually, you would think EVERYONE outside the hobby (and a lot inside) would be glad to have the ladies moving off the streets and onto the Internet.
Suddenly, a big portion of the business becomes invisible. Their kids would never see it, no matter what part of town the are driving around in. A little NetNanny software and they won't stumble on it on the Internet.

Wonder what the CL ladies are gonna do? Come to sites like this, or go back to walking the streets?

This from CL. Obviously they are doing this on the US only, since that is the only place they have been having trouble with. They have been charging for the ads for quite some time down there, but big surprise, not here. Okay?

http://blog.craigslist.org/

Second, examples from Seattle. The old erotic services, still up, because, big surprise, the people paid for their ads and they aren't going to be deleted just like that. So anyone can continue to view these ads for awhile.

Second, Seattle's new Adult section. It is, btw, directly below erotic lol.

I really hope this 5 minute tour helps, because I believe this is the 5th thread started today on this topic.

Keep trying, Fortunate One, but you are preaching to guys who have no desire to know the reality of the situation. They want to take one tidbit of information and draw their own conslusions from that.

As I stated in another thread, nothing is going to change with the Vancouver Craigslist erotic section, unless the the top Provincial Attorney initiates action.

So, if you wish to see your Craigslist change, he is the man (or woman) to contact. Otherwise, sit back and relax and rejoice that you live in a freer society than where I live.

Readily available stolen/pawnshop/ garage sale/classified ad computer, piggybacked onto one of a thousand unsecured wifi networks available in every city.
Do whatever business you wish to do then toss the computer into the nearest river or incinerator.
I dont see traceable here.

You ever wonder how they catch guys in fucking Manila that write a virus for Windows? Unless you're surfing with a copy of Slackware 3.0..finding you ain't that hard dude.

Don't kid yourself. It's about more than just stealing your neighbors Wi Fi.

Maybe find a copy of BeOS dude.
Just like any other criminal cyber thugs cant keep their mouths shut or have friends that rat them out.
Most of the time the only reason the virus/worm/whatever else gets written is to prove something to someone and get recognition.
Some anonymous slob with a minimum amount of common sense that doesnt tell anyone anything is very unlikely to be caught if he takes certain precautions.
All i'm saying is not to feel safe because a person e mails you or makes contact via the web because its not always possible to find out who they are.

Yes, the net always leaves a trail. But if that trail leads to a 90 year old woman with a bunch of cats, then it doesn't do much good for the authorities.

In any case, do we really need to give those people ideas? Or tips on how to do it better?

Anyhow, you'll have the one bad apple spoil the fun for the rest of us boys that have been good :p I've been good, really I have, don't take my nookie away...sometimes you want something other than palmela handerson.

in the erotic section, just different. It will just be the same as the states. Check out the US ads. No different just a little less out there and monitored thats all:D

Before you make a statement like this, please get at least one detail correct.

You say the ES in the US is just different, correct? Then I sugest that you attempt to post an ad in the ES in any US city. What you will find that it has been locked down since about 9:30 PM PDT Tuesday. And in one week from that time it will disappear. I believe the only reason Craigslist is carrying these ad for the full week is that all those advertisers paid $5 to post their ads.

Now I suspect that what you mean when you say it will be "the same as in the states" is that it is the same as in the US. Please explain how it can be the same in Vancouver as in the US when you can go right now and post an ad in the Vancouver section. Good luck doing that in San Francisco section.

Please do me the courtesy of at least checking out the Erotic Services of the San Francisco page and put here how many ad have been posted in the last 72 hours

Either stop making misleading statements or post here the number of ads you have found since Tuesday evening in SF. Do you have the courage to state that there are.................

Zero ads?
