I'm not so sure you'd want to. Looking at that list it looks like those are all shit ass advertising and spam sites. While it won't hurt to delete them all, I wouldn't bother.

Is your comp some name brand like HP, Dell, Gateway, etc....???

How many of you guys are using Shaw Cable. Not until about 9 months ago , I realised Shaw has introduced its own anti-virus and security system , or you call Shawsecure which is free ,provided that you are Shaw customers.
I was told by a gegk that Shaw Secure is one of the best anti-virus system in the market .

Since then ,I had deleted my Norton. As you know as a Perb member I would love to surf around. I did pick up a few viruses ,spywares or malwares. However they were all deleted instantly. Shawsecure up-dated every hour.So that means my secure system is very up today. I can sleep well every night.

Before that I used Norton. First I had to pay to up-date every year. Secondly it did not up-dated frequently and worse of all it did not do its job.
Since I have adopted Shawsecure, I can sleep happily every night without worrying that my computer shut down any time!

Before I deleted my Norton, I had picked up 22 viruses into my computer! That sucks!!!!!

That's what I was thinking. I figured taht the ads and spam were there for a reason. I'm on an older Dell.

I've been using shawsecure as well. It was great initially and would pick up tons of stuff. Lately, my comp's slowed down a lot as well and even though I've been scanning for viruses and malware, nothing's come up. I downloaded Adaware from trapper's link and ran that and nothing came up as well. I've also been making sure that I keep XP updated; so, I have no problems like Anna, just frustrated with the speed (or lack of it) of my computer.

Anna, my best friend is a software developer for a very reputable employer and he's top at what he does. He knows what he's talking about and I always follow his advice. I'm also pretty knowledgable.

And NO, don't run all of these!

My friend runs Grisoft AVG Free for viruses and you say you already have that, so no worries. As long as it keeps updating and scanning automatically everyday.

Then Lavasoft's AdAware and Spybot for the other crap. I do the same. These are the best anti-adware & anti-apyware programs out there. But you do have to run manual scans in them at regular intervals—at least 2-3 times a week and daily if you surf porn sites (there's a ton of crap on them).

These three things are all you need besides getting that pop-up blocker setting going in Internet Explorer.

Now relax, and breathe—you'll be fine.

(Now, if I'd followed this friend's advice when I'd bought my computer, I wouldn't have bought the one I bought from the place I bought it, and it wouldn't have been in the shop for over a month recently awaiting a new hard drive, but I'd lost touch with him for over a year back then. Oh well, he did help me get it set up properly again when I got it back so as to avoid major problems as much as possible in the future, and if this thing gives me more grief when it's out of warranty, when I can afford it, I'll end up scrapping parts from it and I'll have a better machine.)
I have to say that Victoria Rose is recommending what I use personally.
I would only add that using Mozilla Firefox would help prevent unwanted spyware and crap.
If you are still having problems I would try the Free, as in beer, Trendmicro Housecall spyware and virus scan.

Basically when you go to a web site whether through your browser or through a program that might be updating it`s virus info, it needs to resolve the www.sitename.com to it`s IP address. For example https://perb.cc resolves to 69.90.73.184. For my computer to resolve that address it checks in this order:

First your hosts file, and then if it`s not found there it uses your DNS servers that your ISP has assigned to you (if it`s not there your ISP DNS servers go to the registrar of all the domains to do a lookup and then caches this newly discovered address for a certain amount of time for the next guy going to that site) If you put

69.90.73.184 https://perb.cc

in your hosts file, your computer would never do a DNS lookup (go to your ISP`s name servers) on that site and would automatically go to the address specified. 127.0.0.1 is the local loopback address of your computer. No matter what other ip address you may have assigned to your network card, how many cards you have, etc. 127.0.0.1 will always loop back to your computer. So if you had

127.0.0.1 https://perb.cc

when you typed https://perb.cc into your browser you would actually be looking on your own computer for that web site. Of course it`s not there so you will usually get a page not found error.

As noted previously your hosts file seems to have been updated to block alot of junk sites. Shaw probably did this. The "best practice" for your hosts file however, is to put whatever you want into it (sites you want to block) and then make the file read only. This prevents malicious spyware/software from modifying it to block the good sites.

Security Suite

I have been using Computer Associates security suite for the past 3 or 4 years with no problem. The suite consists of a Firewall, Anti Virus and a Spyware blocker/remover. It updates itself every 4 hours. I think the cost is $29 a year for both my desk top and my lap top.

I also have the Google pop up blocker, and I haven't had a pop up since I loaded it.

127.0.0.1 ad.de.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net...etc (long list)
aznboi9:
Any chance you could post the entire list so I can add it to my hosts file? Mine had nothing in it but the localhost reference and when I run scans in Spybot, apparently my connection has been slumming around these kinds of sites without my knowledge or consent. I'd like to put a stop to that.

dr_pepper:
Thank you for the info on this. Very informative! This has to be by far the most valuable thing I've learned about protecting my computer that I can remember. The idea that I can prevent my computer from going to these junk sites in the first place without a fancy, expensive program is very reassuring.

The part about adding IP addresses of commonly visited sites like PERB is very helpful too. That will save me time getting to sites like this in the first place.

Spybot S&D will load a host file if you go to the advanced mode.
Go to the tools tab,
check the hosts file on the main screen,
go to the 'host file' tool on the left sidebar and
click 'add Spybot S&D hosts list'.
This will add the spybot large spybot S&D hosts list to your comp. There is also the setting to lock the hosts file under 'IE Tweaks' tool on the left tool bar.
