Seeking to expand my networking horizon, are there any schools that actually TEACH good networking courses? Oddly enough this has been a passion of mine since I first started getting into computers. Belive it or not, I understand the OSI model, know what tcp/ip is about, sadly I never did get to memorizing my IRQ's

The last two I have attended where just all about the money, and not about teaching.

BCIT I have heard was good, what is your opinion on it:confused:

Now about certification, is there any good to have MCSE? I have heard that CISCO is the way to go.

Go with Cisco if you wanted to be treated with respect and admiration.

Only children do MCSE. You'll be grouped in with people with low confidence, who know basically nothing, and treated like a kid.

Thats what I have heard thru the grapevine. MCSE doesnt mean much anymore because everyone seems to have it.

Some day I want to get to the CCIE level:D

Are pc's masculine or feminine?

This is all you really need to know:

Two French groups were formed to determine the gender of computers.
Both groups were required to give four reasons for their recommendation.

The men's group decided that computer should definitely be of the feminine gender ("la computer"), because

No one but their creator understands their internal logic
The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else
Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later review
As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheque on accessories for it.
The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine "le computer") because:

In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on.
They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves
They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem
As soon as you commit to one, you realise that if you had waited a little longer you could have gotten a better model.

I would start any technical training by first making sure the student had proper problem solving skills. Problem solving skills are far more important then any certification. I would instruct any student to read How to solve it.

Specifically for networking students I suggests learning at home. Set up a network at home. With all the virtual machines a person can run it's pretty simple and inexpensive. Inside this network set up firewalls (any firewall that requires you to write your own rules, like Linux's IP chains, or IPF or OpenBSD's pf). This will ingrain a understanding of basic networking and protocols, and a more problem solving skills (you have to make sure your firewall is working properly and doing that will expose a student to network analysis and tools).

Anyone with good networking skills and a good foundation in networking can master any level of certification with ease.

Pigs apparently prefer to be clean, if given the chance. It's just that mud and other viscous, opaque substances offer good sun protection.

Anyway, check out ebay and see if you can find a good price on some little routers or switches with IOS. It takes some getting used to, it's not the nicest interface, but once you know IOS, you will grudgingly admit that it does make some sense... and everyone else rips it off, so if you can drive IOS, chances are you'll be able to run a juniper, foundry, 3com, riverstone, HP...

You might want to look at the study material for the CISSP and the SANS GIAC certifications. As certifications they're getting kind of lame (too easy) but at least the study guides should point you at a bunch of areas of specialization.

You might want to consider getting a couple of O'Reilly books and just diving tin. Learn perl, php, mysql and apache - you can do it on unix or windows. Once you've honed your ability to learn some technology independently, collecting certifications should be a snap. I'm sure the study guides for any certification you're interested in are easily available. ;)

Are you thinking of entering into that career? I am wondering if the IT market is saturated, and if so is the money still good? I have no idea as I am not a technical person.
The money is good, if you really know your stuff - I guess that's the way it is with a lot of careers. For the fresh graduates from an IT school or those with a new certification and not much experience to back it up, get ready for a mc.job.com ... at least for a while.

Yes I am still considering it:) I have wanted to do this for the longest time but seriously I am not sure its worth it or wtf else is going on with the tech industry:eek:

Yes I know they prefer to be clean, and it was just another ODD figure of my speech that I would be very happy doing what I had just described:D

Thank you again for your insight into that. I guess you can say I am a baby geek and just getting started:p

Each school I have been too, both CDI in Winnipeg and Polaris Media Center up north, both stated that if got the certifications you would get the job, boom bada bing!

I am never going to go to another private school again as in CDI, the instruction was just bascially read your books and write the test on the comp, very new if not any hands on learning:rolleyes:
