Can anyone help me here. Had a friend reformat my computer the other day, after that it is running a lot better and faster, except now, I have no sound. I should mention I am using windows xp. I checked my control panel and clicked on sounds and devices and it say's no audio device. Can anyone help me on how to install the audio device with step by step instructions. When it comes to computers I am a not very computer illiterate.

If you have a name brand PC (like Acer, HP, Toshiba, etc...) what is the model number of the computer? That way we can look up to see what audio card/chipset you have.
I had happen to me a couple of times before. Just look up the audio driver on the internet and download it and install it. Don't know how to do it, but that seems to be your problem.

A stupid answer but sometimes the speakers are plain unplugged (happened to me before - went to all this work and it turns out the wire was loose) Or do another reboot in case the driver did not load.

If none of the other suggestions have worked yet:
Click on Start
Right-click on My Computer
Select Properties
Click on the Hardware tab
Click on Device Manager
In the window that pops up, are there any entries with question marks or red x's on them?
If there are any that seem to be obviously audio-related, right-click and select uninstall, then reboot and let XP re-detect the hardware (you might need your original XP disk).
If you are not sure, post the entries here and maybe we can figure it out.

Thank you all for your help. You were right afreet1444, I re-installed the driver of the CD and now I have sound again.
After you've done everything described in the steps above, get yourself a Mac —they just do what they are supposed to do.
