You have completely misread the comments.
Almost all of them are from people who HAVE been in similar circumstances.

There is nowhere to run.
There are no cops.
You are outnumbered and the intruders are actively threatening you.
They are actively destroying and stealing your property that you need to feed your family.
You have a family, wife and children who are depending on you for protection.
If the intruders destroy your farm equipment you may lose your income for the year.

Westwoody......you just turned into my best friend.
I would add to your comments if you'll allow me.....

Twice I have had a number of young people show up here in the cover of darkness.
The first time, they entered my home, thinking I was away....They were wrong.
The second time I caught three people trying to kill my dogs, steal equipment, and/or vehicles...They were stopped.
I've had several occasions when people have entered my property from the mountains....by mistake, and set up camp.
Most understood their mistake, but on one occasion I had a drunken shithead Hunter actually reach for his weapon leaning against a tree....that was a mistake as well.
The RCMP is over an hour away....if they are able to even show up at all, due to road conditions. I do not have 911 capability....and the detachment has 3 members....so if I had a landline, or cell service, in the middle of the night, I would be getting them out of bed to respond, with a home phone call ....that's assuming I had phone communication in the first place.
Unofficialey......we are asked to handle immediate problems ourselves by the detachment members till help can arrive.
In ALL these situations, after the investigation was over, I have received nothing but understanding from the RCMP, and a firm handshake for a job well done.
Since leaving the military.....I want nothing more than to be left alone, and have a peaceful, quiet existence ....I will walk a mile around you to avoid a conflict...
It is a neccesity for me to own firearms....both long guns and sidearms.....I cannot even hazard a guess how many times they've saved my life, with bear, and mountain lion encounters, while calving, riding the fences, or repairing them.
I also have them not only to protect my stock, but put down a suffering animal...they must not only be viewed as an offensive device, but defensive as well....every situation has a sequence of events that evolve, sometimes that evolution manifests itself into conflict,....even in Canada.
I now see the -19 temperatures are screwing with my satellite ....so this post might not be complete.
