Recently a friend and I got on the subject of colon cleansing - it may also be known as detoxyifying, etc. Basically it cleans out your colon of built-up material and is said to be good for you.

I've never tried any products in this area and am looking for feedback from anybody that may have done so. My friend was telling me that his co-worker had tried "colon blow" over the course a weekend and had to make sure that he was near a toilet because when you have to go "you have to go".

I am wondering about the health risks....also once you clean out colon, will you have to go that much more often to the bathroom once you are off the products? In my case, I drive a lot in my job and am not always near a toilet. I don't want to try something that is going to have my system going "number 2" alot when I don't have a toilet handy. Right now, I manage once a day and am ok with that.

My friend was also saying that his coworker believes that he got rid of up to 7 pounds of built up stuff in his bowels. He was told by his coworker that you wouldn't believe what came out? (not that everyone generally shares their poop stories!).

Have you tried any type of colon cleansing products?
Did you like the results?

I'm in my mid 40's and have always heard of these products but never went for it.

Looking for feedback/good/bad/etc.

thanks,
Cruiser

I'm with HHBL, go see a professional. It's not expensive, there are lots of ads in Common Ground and other health papers, and it's great to have an experienced practitioner at the helm. Doing it with a product just wouldn't be worth it to me. Having to stay home or be near the toilet? That would mean the runs and cramps, etc...yuk! Your appointment at the Colon Hydrotherapy practitioner will be super clean, no muss - no fuss, all done and on your way to other activities in an hour, using warm water only. Supposed to be excellent for our long-term health!

Is not basically a very sophisticated version of enema?

I have a cancer patient in my family now, and I was looking into alternative remedies.
I came across with the Gerson Therapy, in which patients are required to drink 13 cups vegetable juice ever one hour, and some soup, that's it.
The detox also have to (or should) come with coffee enema.

When you fast (juice fast), your body try to consume unnecessary cell/substances in a body first, which in theory includes poop bits in the large intestine. So, in order to avoid having the toxin going back in to the system, Gerson therapy strongly recommend coffee enema. I have no clue in the logic of using coffee.

In general, I don't see any side effect of enema ad long as you care about the cleanliness of the equipment.

(i do use enema in my Dom session, hahahahahaha, I can help you with that? *wink*)

Most Doctors will tell you Colon Hydrotherapy is bullshit. Simply eat better and drink lots of fluids...

In this case, I agree with ITB.

These types of treatments can result in a bacterial imbalance over a period of time. The flushing results in beneficial bacteria being lost. Good bacteria keep bad bacteria in check.

It may feel good for a few days, but after that symptoms may get worse.

I recommend that everyone be careful here...if you're not a medical expert or a practitioner, kindly don't claim that this will happen or that will happen. Speak from your experience, if you have some, otherwise just be careful.

If you're the research type, feel free to site web (or other) references here, but don't attempt to come off as experts, when what you have are personal opinions.

99 percent of those who promote these treatments and/or products are charlatans. If you have regular bowel habits (one or more dumps per day), your system is in good working order and doesn't require help.

I'm really amused by those commercials promoting colon cleansing products for weight loss. They claim that people may have 20 or more pounds of fecal material inside that causes bloating, etc., so cleaning it out results in almost immediate weight loss. They should use the slogan, "You're not fat; you're just full of shit". :p Actually, these charlatans are the ones who are full of shit, but they're laughing all the way to the bank.

I don't believe that's exactly the formula, Miss YA...I own the video, and have done extensive reading on their work...but you're on the right track! This doesn't, in any way, make me an expert, it just makes me an information-seeker!

Certified Colon Hydro therapist is not a doctor. "Natural Health Technologies" isn't a Doctor's office. However I guess if you are full of shit, that's the place to go.

Ouch.......................why does that sound like a burn.:pound:

In the 70's I read a lot about Vitamin C being beneficial for many things besides the common cold. One was taking mass doses to cleanse the digestive tract.

So lots of times I did the 9 grams of pure ascorbic acid mixed in water. Of course the first movement was like a blessed relief then the diareah came then all that came through was water. The first time I did it I was completely exhausted and felt like I had run a bad marathon afterwards. A friend mentioned about losing good bacteria so the next time I did the treatment as soon as the water started to flow I consumed the finest raw yogurt I could find. Felt great afterwards and full of energy. During this time I made big changes to my diet and stopped eating junk food.

Since the 80's I have been exercizing well, eating healthy and drinking lots of water daily. I think that is all one really needs to keep a well maintained digestive tract.

Oh, and I try to get a good prostate massage every couple of months.

Respectfully, everything in the lounge is personal opinions. Perhaps the question should go into the health forum.

Traditional doctors say it's bunk. The non-traditional ones say it's a necessity.

How does one figure out who is right or wrong?

One should always seek the advice of medical experts. But without any ability to judge, which expert are you going to choose?

That is where a little bit of knowledge about basic human biology helps. It is everyone's responsibility to know this, it is not the doctor's responsibility to educate you. With basic understanding of human biology, you can choose more wisely which medical expert to listen to.

The colon is miles long and its function is to absorb nutrients from food and compact waste that becomes fecal matter, it is full of bacteria that aids in this function. It follows into the rectum then the anus. The rectum and the colon are porous and absorb fluids almost directly into the blood stream.

Because they absorb fluids into the body, it would stand to reason that one should be very careful what one puts into their rectum and colon. There have been medical reports of deaths where people put alcohol into their rectums - one can easily get drunk that way and die of alcohol poisoning.

The gastrointestinal tract is a closed system; each component function depends on another component function working correctly. Invasive measures therefore should be taken very very cautiously. In general, the body is self regulating and tries to be self healing. One should always attempt to aid the body to repair itself and use short-cut methods that are invasive as a last resort.

I am not a medical doctor - but my basic understanding about the colon is as I have just explained. With that I conclude that I would not use colon cleansing unless it is a last resort, and unless it is using only filtered water. Foreign substances introduced into the body (via the colon) is unnatural and cannot be good for you. Remember also that the body's own bacteria, good and bad, will be flushed out with the liquid. Then the body must regenerate the good bacteria - which in itself is a stress on the immune system especially if any bad bacteria becomes present later. In theory then your immune system could be so stressed from the lack of good bacteria to handle the bad bacteria (and bacteria multiplies thousands upon thousands in minutes), it could result in severe sickness or worse.

So basically I can see it working, but in very few applicable extreme cases and only with tremendous care and only with filtered water. I would therefore advise against it and instead find a way to get your body to work with itself to flush the colon, ie: eat a diet with little meat and high in vegetables and fruits (and ruffage), and drink a lot of water.

I second everything you just said there jesuschrist.

Also, I'm curious as to what this hydrotherapy does to your sodium levels... sounds like it would pretty much destroy your natural balance.
