One of the true heroes of aviation in multiple wars, test pilot and should have been part of the Space Program because he had “The Right Stuff”.
If you’ve been to DC and the Smithsonium Flight and Space museum you’d see the XS-1 that he flew to break the sound barrier; you’d be shocked. It’s little more than a go cart attached to a gas tank.
