Maybe I try to live in a perfect world where I attempt to see the good in everybody. Your statement is not at all typical of what I have found to be true about the vast majority of Canadians.

The truth is, a line does not have the ability to divide the desireable from the undesireable. People like you have described live on both sides of the border.

But, in my almost 10 years of frequent visits to Vancouver the one trait I have found that makes me admire Canadians is their politeness. It almost seems to be inherited. Let me give two examples: 1. Ride an escalator in one of the downtown ST stations and notice how everybody who is not climbing the stairs has moved to the right; now, come to SF and do the same thing in one of the downtown BART stations, and if you are in a hurry, too bad, nobody is getting out of your way. 2. I use public transit a lot in Vancouver and the thing that amazes me the most is the politeness of the drivers, but moreso, the teenagers. Ride a bus in the Richmond district of SF in the after-school hours and you get the feeling you are in the middle of a food fight in the school cafeteria. But, the bus drivers there are the worst. No matter where you stand waiting, it seems the drivers are trained to stop 3-4 steps either ahead or behind where you are waiting. Never happens in Vancouver.

Enjoy your city and your society for what it is, but please do not be bashing the entire society of your southern neighbors for the few bad seeds that stand out in you mind. Keeping it friendly here will result in a better board and maybe we will not be losing so many good members.

As I said before, my intention was to make joke of the sheer stupidity of the article, by writing a blatently stupid one of my own. I thought that by writing it in the form of an article, it would be enough for people to get that I was merely mocking said article. I like Americans as much as I like Canadians, which is to say that I dislike some Americans as much as I dislike some Canadians. Thinking that Canadians are polite is a generalization as well, and as stereotypical as thinking Americans are rude and crass. And I'm inclined to believe that some people view Canadian "politeness" as being wussy... at least, that's the notion I get from my American friends.

As for our public transit system, recent reports indicate that it is the worst in Canada, if not North America. And I know first hand how it is, since I take public transit to and from work every day. Not all are bad, but there are a few, and sometimes it's enough to put an ugly mark on the company/system/group as a whole. But like you say, don't let a few bad seeds color your vision, right?

Over the past few years we in Canada have seen a few of our politicians bash Americans thinking it gets them brownie points with Canadian voters. There is some conflict over things like the Iraq war, softwood lumber, etc. and the press plays up the differences so that a portion of public sentiment conveniently and ignorantly puts the blame on all Americans.

Since these remarks make their way out to mass media its no wonder we find people repeating the sentiment.

The fact is most negative generalizations could be directed at human nature, not one specific group or demographic.

In response to some of the comments:

Yes I would agree most Canadians tend to be polite, an old joke about the definition of a Canadian is, someone who apologizes to you after you have stepped on their foot.

Although a very complex topic, I find that negative sentiment towards Americans in general do tend to be out of limited context or ignorance of the governing factors.

Fortunately most Canadians that I know (having lived here my whole life) will reflect on both the good and bad aspects of both our cultures when asked.

In any case, sorry you were offended by an offhand remark sfmike.

Regarding this particular thread topic, food chains and grocery stores largely decide what a portion of the masses should eat. In most cases it is not as healthy as it could be. Convenience, availability, and cost (most healthier foods cost more) are probably the real culprit. Convenient, North Americanized Chinese food as well although most Chinese will agree that Chinese restaurant food contains more oil, salt, and MSG than home cooked Chinese food and thus probably not as healthy. Since most Caucasians eat restaurant Chinese food opposed to home cooked, it would follow that it could be categorized as unhealthy. Too much yet hay the Cantonese would say….

Hopefully some introspective thought on the topic goads some us into eating more carefully, myself included…….
