I was hoping that at least Canada would have a shot at the World Cup in qualifying in the final six of their division. (CONCAAF?) But the 8-1 drubbing by Honduras was a disgrace!! Why can't this country compete at a higher level in trying to qualify for the world's most popular sporting event? And don't give me any excuse that we are a winter sports country and hockey is number one. Look at the Scandinivian countries: they usually send a Swedish, Danish team to the World Cup. All we send is excuses for not showing up.

There's a lot of European and South American immigrants in this town who are very passionate about soccer, and all their kids play it.
The infrastructure is there, but I really don't know why it isn't successful at the higher levels. Maybe it's the politics, and the advancement of kids who are somehow 'connected' rather than the most talented.

Changes in youth development are starting, but it will be 15 - 20 years before we will get any tangible results. The Canadian MLS teams have started development programs in absence of the the American College systems which provide a pool of players for their teams. Although in North America, these players are available to both Canadian and American teams, they are not available for Canadian National teams.

I would not dismiss Central American teams as little countries we should be able to easily beat simply because we are a first world nation. The big clubs in Europe have been developing players in these countries for the last 40 years to fill their rosters. Most of those countries have more representation in the European leagues than Canada does.

What sport do they play in Honduras, Mexico, Costa Rica, El salvador more than any other..What are the populations of those countries in relation to Canada..

How many players are playing Soccer in those countries in Comparison to Canada?

Canadian soccer is in the toilet because it's run by Bureaucrats and not by soccer people. With no change in the future they keep recycling their crap over and over. Victor Montagliani is tasked with Soccer in Canada as President.. he moved up from a vice presidents position. The entire board needs to be sacked and replaced.

Toronto BMO field is the headquarters for Canadian soccer. Pitch is under snow and ice 6 months out of the year but brilliant. Run international matches / games at Commonwealth stadium in Edmonton. yet another brilliant move. WTF?

Soccer should be run out of the west coast by actual Soccer people who know the freaking game.

Not bowing to the biggest corporate dollar. Most of the corporate dollars I suppose are going to the salaries for the board and aren't being filtered down to the players and development that's needed.

Reminds me of the days when Alpine Skiing Canada was run out of an office in Ottawa. Ottawa hundreds of miles away from an actual fking mountain where racing actually occurs.

Why not run it out of Regina Saskatchewan.. makes just as much sense. They finally came to their sense as did Hockey Canada running programs based out of Calgary!
I always wondered why that was...
Soccer is not my thing whatsoever - I would rather watch a paint drying competition, to be honest

Some great points have been raised in this thread.

The loss to Honduras was and is a complete embarrasment. We have more people playing soccer in this country then play hockey believe it or not. Proffesional soccer pays very well over in Eroupe, consider that to be similar to the NHL especially teams playing in Spain, Italy, and England.

We do need to get soccer minded people running the program, we eventually will get there will just take some time.
