Personal opinion: there's more justification to change the name than there is not tso why not.
Edit to add: BP says they made the decision in May so not related to current pressure to change the Edmonton team's name, but that they'd support a name change anyway. Still... lots of outrage and calls for boycott against BP for this move. So it ain't just a move progressives resort to.
