Best restaurant in Chinatown?

Is there a consensus on which is the best Chinese restaurant in Chinatown (Vancouver) that is open for late-ish dinner? Pretty please help me out here, I don't trust restaurant review sites, they are too shilly.

Within the local chinese community, the consensus is that the best chinese restaurants are not in china town.

For the last few years, there has been a set of awards lists for local chinese restaurants, one list generated by the restaurant patrons, and one list generated by chinese food critics.

Like Stew said, Bao Bei is good.

If you want one open late during the night market, try Hons or Gain Wah. Both located on the same street as the night market.

There's a little cafe called New Town Bakery on East Pender Street, famous for their resurrection of the 1970s Ovaltine Cafe's original Apple Tarts. They are also known for their variety of asian steamed buns as well. On the far west side of Chinatown, kitty corner to Tinseltown is Wild Rice. There they present some traditional Chinese entrees in a very nice setting. Their techno music can sometimes be a little too loud and irritating or maybe it's because I'm getting old. Regardless, they do have a good martini menu. Service as of late has been a hit and miss. It's a little pricey for what you get but it's decent.

As Stew mentioned earlier, Bao-Bei is also good. Great creative dishes and drinks.

BITD my father and I used to eat at ON On's Tea Garden and it was very good....good quality food and massive portions....I dont know if it is still in business as this was over 20 years ago.....best rule of thumb for a Chinese establishment in Chinatown is to look at the clientele.....if you see a predominant amount of Chinese people eating at a Chinese restarant then they are there for the food which is obviously good.

on on's in chinatown got closed down in the early 80's or so because the food inspectors found cat and pigeon meat in their freezer! i don't think they ever opened again, although there is an on on wonton house in burnaby. i don't know if it's the same family or not

If you really want a place in chinatown, and you're dining alone, I'd recommend one of the "hong kong cafe" style places.

Hon's in the 200 block of Keefer is dependable, and reasonably accessible to those that speak only English.
Similarly, "The Boss" on the 500 block of Main is, shall I say, more presentable.
If you want to go a little farther west, inside the International Village, on the ground floor, try "East Fusion Food".

Hons is horrible...I got really sick from that place back in March... AVOID IT!

ON ON's is looonnnggg gone.... It was the best!

Bao Bei is tapas Chinese fusion-ish restaurant. Not a true Chinese restaurant. Their dishes are quite pricey, if you got some extra cash and wanna eat good go for it!

My favorite places in Chinatown (regardless of hours): Goldstone Bakeryand Kam Gok Yuen (best curry beef brisket I have ever eaten!!!). Not many places in Chinatown are open late though..

My favorite late night places on East Hastings: Penny's, and Pelican Seafood restaurant.

Bao Bei gets my vote

Reminds me when Chambar just opened about 7 years ago. They had that winning formula for success and same as Bao Bei. Kudos to the entrepreneurs behind Bao Bei, they struck restaurant GOLD in Chinatown and became one of the city's best in a short period of time. :thumb:

For dim sum Floata is hard to beat. Excellent quality and reasonable prices.

Phnom Penh in Chinatown is awesome for their wings.
Always busy so there tends to be a bit of a wait especially for larger groups but worth it imo.
