I Love These Threads!
the best of the year
KING KONG- wasnt expecting much going in. i hated the originals. but after Return of the King and the other 2 LOTR movies you cant say no to peter jackson. this movie isnt doing too well at the box office and i will blame that on the hype surrounding it. when you thread a coldplay song into a tv spot with rants and raves from movie critics and flashy footage from the movie people are naturally going to say "yeah right." This movie isnt all hype. Naiomi Watts is lovely, Jack Black takes a step in the right direction and Adrian Brody is the shit. Keep an eye on this guy. He's gonna be big, if he isnt already. King Kong is amazing. His facial expressions, mannerisms, are all completely believable. With digital characters in cinema now you're either going to get a Jar Jar Binks reaction, or a Gollum reaction. Fortunately for King Kong this is as great as Gollum was in LOTR. If not better. There's some heart break thrown in for good measure. Take a girl friend and you can put an arm around her and squeeze a boob while shes dabbing away tears "there, there baby, its OK." *honk honk*
Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang- Robert Downey Junior and Val Kilmer. I loved this movie. Downey is a thief who stumbles his way into Hollywood when he barges into a casting call for a crime drama type movie, while evading the cops. Val Kilmer is a Hollywood detective that Downey has to follow around to research the role he won (he cant even act) and the two find themselves in a deep mess involving a movie producer, a childhood sweethearts sister, and a whole whack of other trouble. It's hip, it's slick, it's funny. Anyone who hasn't seen this movie is gay, and most likely hurts small animals.
40 Year Old Virgin- The first hour of this flick is very well done. Then like a lot of movies these days, the second half is kind of lacking. It's one of the best of the year (for me) because #1- it wasnt a sequel or a remake #2 it was co-written and stars Steve Carell. In all the movies Carell has been in he absolutely steals all the scenes, and upstages the starring role. Check Bruce Almighty and Anchorman and you'll know what I mean.
Crash- A lot of people didnt like this movie. I loved it. This is one of those movies I think should be shown in high school english or drama classes. Every character has a purpose, and every character learns a lesson. I've seen this movie three times and I still take something away from it everytime. Rapper Ludacris shows everyone that rappers can possibly have a place in hollywood. His role isn't very far from street hood, but he does more with it than Eminem or Snoop Dogg could have. Check it out
Sin City- Its a living comic book. Mickey Rourke dishing out heaty bowlfuls of ice cold revenge, a town run by hookers, a man conversing with a corpse, and Jessica Alba humping a pole in leather chaps. Do I need to say anymore?
War of the Worlds- This is up for debate. The first hour is REALLY intense. Tim Robbins enters the picture and it goes tits up. The happy ending sucked too. But that first hour... Oh boy.
Walk the Line- love these bio-pics. Made a johnny cash fan out of me. He was MORE hardcore than elvis presley and jerry lee lewis put together. Joquin (im pretty sure i spelled that wrong) Phoenix learned the guitar from scratch and sang all of the material along reese witherspoon and it just made the movie that much better. Speaking of bio-pics they should do one for ron jeremy. I would star, and jessica alba could be ginger lynn. Id work for scale. Someone call speilberg.
Brokeback Mountain- With all the chatter surrounding this movie i had to mention it. I saw it at the Park on Cambie yesterday, (go see this theater while you still can its like being in a time warp) and i enjoyed it because it was half as long as the horse whisperer and had twice as much a story. I refer to the horse whisperer not only for the cowboy element but for the dramatic use of scenery shots to enhance the mood. All kidding aside, its nice to see hollywood embrace something as touchy as gay cowboys. We've seen chicks making out on screen for ages but its something completely different when two dudes are going at it. And before you tear my head off here its not about tongue play and hiding the sausage in the montana highlands its about love. These cowboys are struggling with what they are and what they have in an age when its a crime most often punishable by death. i could articulate it a bit more but just go see it and save MR Blonde the trouble
Skeleton Key- This one is good for two reasons. #1 Kate Hudson is hot and #2 i love the whole hoodoo/voodoo concept. a good movie doesnt have to have a 200 million dollar budget (it helps) or a-list actors, a lot of explosions and girl on girl action, or a villan with a german accent. As fine and dandy as all these aspects are...a good movie tells a story. A story that will keep the viewer guessing, or wondering what's going to happen or where they're going to be taken, and a lot of the times, much like life, the destination doesnt matter, the journey that gets you there does. This is one of those movies.
That's all folks.
wicked thread. i had fun
