Funny you should mention the topic Vanman...

I have befriended one of these young ESL students recently, she shares part of the walk home from the bus with me (usually the same bus morning and afternoon). So we eventualy introduced ourselves (actually, a rainstorm this summer introduced us - you know the story, one umbrella - two people? ...how romantic) and since then we have chatted a lot.

She is here from Japan, staying with a homestay in the neighbourhood, but is looking to move in with a female roomie this Fall, but she says that she doesn't get enough money from home to allow her to do this. (hint, hint, maybe?) During conversation I asked her if she had a boyfriend at home and she said no, that Canada was too "dangerous" a place for a girl to have a boyfriend at home (I didn't have to guess what THAT meant!)

So, what next? Do I suggest that a girl (like her) might make the "friendship" of an older guy (like me) who would not be adverse to paying some of the rent in exchange for visitation rights? Maybe with the roomie involved as well? Or do I continue to play dumb because she is basically a 4 or 5 out of 10 in looks. She is slim and all, but not a face to write a review about. However, sometimes the plain ones know they have to try harder, and maybe she is an 11 out of 10 in the service department.

Any suggestions?

1. get an asian provider of the proper dialect to write you a note. It should be a handwritten RESPONSE to an imaginary original note YOU wrote to your last ESL girlfiend, gently breaking off your weekly arrangement with her for reasons of her rudeness and excessive costs. Her reply should be a bit brash, a bit aggressive, and a bit uncaring, yet short and direct. Her written note should re-cap the situation... "you said you want to break from me.. you say I am asking too much money..." and end with an insult executed with slang... perhaps caling you a shithead stupid white dumbass. Trust me... you want to have this written by someone you trust to HELP you with the scam.
   
2. In a moment of friendly confidence, ask your new ESL friend if she might be able to translate a note for you. Tell her you knew this wonderful girl, alot like her, who was so nice and honest at first, but whom you suspect has become corrupted by Canadian city ways. Tell her your friend has changed drastically the past few months, and while you don't know how you will get along without her friendship and comraderie you have come to enjoy so much, you simply can't tolerate her rudeness any more. You know what it says basically, but don't understand the ending part. Of course tell her you are trusting her, and that it might be very sensitive information that only an old man or a young woman would understand.
   
3. she reads the note, and she now knows you pay for it from someone like her, except meaner, lesser-class, and abusive. She may even feel sorry for you.
