....I'm on the horns of a llama!

I got my cheque from the builder I work for....and they have overpaid me by a considerable amount. I scratch my head...and see the one invoice on there that simply does not add up...it's not in my invoice sequence...surely not an amount I have invoiced...etc etc.

I phone the A/P girl on Friday...leave a message...please call me...you have paid me too much.

I phone the other A/P girl today....again...leave a message.

Now I'm slightly annoyed. I wish to give money back to this most valued customer....surely that would be a call that should get returned yes? Shall I go up the ladder with my complaints? Shall I cash it and pretend it never happened?...*nah, couldn't do that*...Shall I just quit whining and wait for the eventual return call?

I know...I will phone Revenue Canada and tell them I am, actually, a good boy...and sign the cheque over to them. I'm sure they would know how to redtape it.

Two times in my life I have been paid for something that was not for me.
First time was in the 90's both provincal & federal govs were sending out cheques for rebates ( I think for heating costs). The feds sent me an extra one that I didn't clue in on as being extra. When they figured out that they paid twice not only did I have to pay back but they fined me $20 more.
The second time was ICBC sending me a cheque for paying twice on a deductable. I looked into it and found out I only paid once. I called ICBC and explained but they said their records show me paying twice. I hung on to the cheque for 2 weeks befor cashing it . Two months later they called wanting their money back. Luckily I had kept the name of the person I had talked to so I was able to tell them I had tried to return the money once already.

Take the money and put it in a short term T-bill or redeemable GIC. Sit on it until they ask for it back. Consider the interest the fee for your time.

Wow that's the best answer I have heard.

I was once a church's chicken, my order came to like $18, I paid with a $20, but the cashier tried to give me back $22, I told him and he was so surprised and grateful that I told him. I would have felt bad knowing that was probably like 3 hours work for him. Some of the people I was with couldn't believe that I was honest enough to give the money back, I couldn't believe that they weren't.

I wasn't suggesting he keep the money. He has tried to give it back and as of right now they are not ready to take it back. When they want it, it will be ready but if it is any amount of money at all, you might as well collect the interest. It might be one day, it might be 6 months. Besides there is always the random CRRA factor and they may want him to pay on this, in which case the interest would probably cover it.

Wasn't it, "I'm on the horns of an enema"?
dammit!....you're right seth. Oh well, llama works too. As I recall, this spring Tianna had recited a story about this amorous llama at the zoo ...so...there is a connection to all that...tenuous at best.

Excellent advice from those who offered it, and thank you. Given this modern age and email and such...I have sent the following mail (faces smudged and voices changed)...

Usually I find myself calling customers to wonder where is the money? I'm in the most unique situation of having called you in order to say...."why did you give me so much money?"

Your cheque No. xxxx made payable to Llama's Alberta Ltd.....in the amount of $xxxx....contains a line item (your voucher no. xxxx...my alleged invoice no. xxxx) for $xxxx.

Now, unless said line item is your monetary award for "Contractor of the Year" (which I could totally understand my receiving that), I suspect there is a wee error on this cheque.

I have not cashed said cheque and await your advice on how to proceed from here.

Have the most perfect of days,

eddie

...the reply was perfect. Pending resolution of the overpayment...I am to cash the cheque...and they may deduct the overpayment from future billings. Nothing like being teased with an overpayment.

...I love that Ma'am...I won't speak further to your ability to do that very thing....I so laffed at "usedtolikehandjobs"...or whatever name that was...that was cool.

I was just about to make a mindless post on here....and I will do so in any event. Actually, it will be a very mindful post...and more than slightly heartfelt. Those are the best posts.
