...so are they pulling everyone over on the sea to sky and checking tires no matter the weather?

I thought they only added the fine if you got into trouble (ir caused it).

I have 2 vehicles, a short wheel-base 4x4 with big M+S tires, and an SUV with "normal" tires. I'd rather take the suv if there's clear roads, but will take the 4x4 if it's hard-line rules this year.

I read the actual Transport Ministry website advisory, but it's not clear on just how strict it will be.
Anyone got better info on it?

If it's not snowing, probably not too panicked yet. When the snow flies, I have seen them set up a road check just like a drunk driver set up and issue tickets/turn people around who don't have the right tires. They put blitzes on just like they do in town for distracted driving.

I hope to ski 40 days this year at Whistler so I will definitely be putting snows on my awd Subaru. I bought my winters from the Subaru dealership, but because they are on their own rims and I bought my summers from Kal Tire, Kal Tire will swap winters to summers and vice versa for me for free :) Last spring they advised me to buy new winters for this coming winter; have not yet decided if I will do so.

The person that lives in a condo or apt, where are they going to store an extra set of tires? If you have an AWD car like so many people do now that's 4 tires you have to find storage for. Last year wasn't bad enough to require snow tires down in the Mainland, not likely this year will be any worse.

It's BC law that from Oct 1st to March 31st, anywhere outside the lower mainland winter tires with the snowflake symbol must be installed, if not and you get into or cause an accident you will be found at fault regardless I believe and/or face fines

Many tire shops will store them for you at low/no fee.

If you live in Vancouver winter tires are not needed. If you will travel north of Hope or to Whistler on a regular basis then you should have winter tires. If you live in Alberta winter tires should be mandatory.

I hate that they say you need four winter tires for front-wheel drive vehicles. Had to shop around to get someone to sell me just two.

Also heard they won't replace just one if damaged, and you have to get two. Anyone know if that's true?

All sounds like a scam to me.

when I got my first set you could by just 2 for a front wheel drive car but the next car I had you had to buy all 4, that was 7 or 8 years ago

*any licensed tire dealer will only legally "install" four ❄ Winter rated tires, FWD or TWD, they will however, sell you any amount, but no matter your vehicle will only install 4

Best source for ALL tires in Canada is PMCtire.com.Best prices in Canada. They are the equivilent of Tirerack.com in the USA.Last set of tires I bought was far cheaper than even Costco and the shipping cost me $20.Twice I have bought a full set of snowtires on steel winter rims and the mounting and balancing is free of charge.

Ok, I just called non-emergency. Yes, winter tires are required on all vehicles Oct 1-March 31 regardless of weather conditions. The police could turn you around preventing you from going to Squamish on a nice sunny day (we all know BC weather can change quickly) or issue a ticket. There could be spot checks, road blocks or random pull overs to inspect tires.

The person I spoke with suggested checking DriveBC.com, checking with ICBC or a tire shop to inquire whether front wheel/rear wheel drive cars need all 4 tires to be winter tires.

When I got a car with expensive rims and decent rubber, I was offered insurance just for wheels and tires. Later I thought what a waste of $.

At the end of the last winter one wheel and tire was destroyed in one of our Vancouver pot holes.

I put in the claim and got both replaced by the dealer. Not one mention was made about having to buy three more.

That transaction more than paid for the original outlay.

I have successfully driven through 10 winters with only two snow tires. I live on a steep hill, and have a steep driveway, and have had no spinouts, never been stuck, no snow-planing, no extra-wide turns, no rear-enders, just thousands of kms of safe driving on my so-called "dangerous" configuration.

Still think the four tire requirement is a scam to sell more tires.

I guess I won't drive outside of the lower mainland this winter. I lived in the Ontario snow belt for forty years and have never owned snow tires. With the exception of my first two or three years of driving I have never gotten myself stuck. Two inches of snow in metro vancouver and schools get shut down. Like wtf is that? First winter I arrived here 6 years ago the pavement was hot and the big fluffy snowflakes melting as soon as they touched down and people are driving under 20k per hour - Again are you serious? Sissies

5 inches on the ground and I would not be slowing down.

I know I am starting to sound like I work for Kal Tire, but they will store your tires for you. I think it is $100 or $200 a year.
