Ouch! I imagine we will be hearing alot about this over the next couple of days. I was planning on partaking in some company over the last couple of days. I'm glad I didn't. Thank God for the good ole' left hand. Although I will admit that gets quite tiresome after awhile.

Whether City Officials want to admit it or not, the fact that Edmonton is widely known as a haven for this industry draws "tourism" and business. If they decide to change ther tune about how they've left the industry to itself, there could be significant repercussions.
I am not opposed to the City keeping itself clean and monitoring some of the less than cosmetically appealing SWs, but leave the agencies and MPs alone. These businesses are well kept, discreet, and respectable, if they don't hold high standards, they shut themselves down, like any other business. I'm not sure going after them is an intelligent decision. The industry will never go away, we all know that, so making it difficult will only make the industry more secretive and could possibly open the door to parallel itself with illegal activities. I'm not a fan of this news.

Just curious which paper it was in. Had the Sun yesterday and did not see it but heard it on the news. They made it sound like they were all escort agency related but the info above only looks like a few were related to that. I am curious as I thought that Escorts were legal (as long as they are licenced) and if hiring one and if in your own hotel room before discussing anything, can you still get chared with 'communication for the purpose of'?

I heard about it on the radio (CHED) but didn't see anything in the paper...if it was anywhere, you'd think it'd be in The Sun...lol

I read this article and it wasn't totally clear but it sounded like the arrests were sw's and johns, and the escort agencies only were fined for by-law violations, not criminal charges. It didn't sound like mp's were involved at all. Anyone think I misread that?

There were three different stings... sounds like the targeted SW's, and John's in one. Then they went after licensing infractions with another sting. See below...
"In one transaction, we asked for a man and a woman to be sent over for a foursome and neither were licensed, so both were ticketed, along with the agency. In that transaction alone, we laid out $18,000 in fines," he said.
Can you imagine being the SP without the license. Granted it's probably only one month's salary (estimating individual fine @ $4500), but still... that's alot o' dough.

Yeah, the way I read it sounds like escorts/agencies and the street scene. No mention of MPs at all.

It's sort of grey but as the laws stands, it falls on the white side of the law.
The MP exists to give the customer a massage. If something happens between concenting adults behind closed doors it is not against the law. Parts of your session may break city licensing laws, but not criminal laws.
The grey part is the 'common bawdy house' part of the law, but as long as the operators of the MP maintain it is a MP I think they are safe.
Vancouver is different then Edmonton, but the criminal laws still apply. It is not against the criminal code, but some actions might be against city licensing.
Vancouver has two MP style business licenses, a MP and a Body Rub license. I believe the Body Rub license is more expensive and harder to get but has fewer restrictions, but it's been a while since I've read the licenses, but as long as everyone follows the law and restrictions of the license it's all good.
I'm have no training in the law so if you want a professional opinion go hire a pro.
