Saw the thread on Hyundai Ionic 5.. So went out looking at all Electric models and looking for info on what you own and pros and cons ? Would love the new Ford Mustang but see prices around 65-70k ? Anyone have a Hyundai Kona or Kia evo-6 or Niro ? Not looking for Hybrid and only full electric. Tesla looks good but hearing problems with service ? Not looking to debate gas versus electric and only want to hear if you own a electric car and manufacturer you went with. TIA

Dealer support is as important as the car.
We live a few kilometres from an auto mall with full service Hyundai, Toyota, BMW dealers.

Tesla? I don’t know how their support works. There’s lots of ridiculous Tesla failures. The latest was a Tesla police car that locked its doors and the police couldn’t get out. Stuck doors are a common issue with Tesla.

I love my Model 3 RWD bought brand new earlier this year for which I paid $15k less than it would cost to order today—the price went up twice, it no longer qualifies for grants and it’s now in a higher retail tax bracket. The only issue I’ve had so far was the rear defroster didn’t work when delivered but this was taken care of in an afternoon with rental or Uber credit provided. Other than that, no issues or maintenance after 25k kilometres besides tire rotation and windshield fluid top ups. Too many enjoyable aspects to mention but for cons I’ll say the door opening mechanisms, inside and out can be challenging for some passengers, even after multiple rides. It is odd, too, the rear doors don’t have emergency latches—better no panic and break the window if it sinks or goes up in flames 😂 I googled yet couldn’t find the police stuck in Tesla story, but yeah there are mechanical escape latches in all seating compartments except the backseat of the model 3. The minimalist infotainment / instrument display is a winner for me but can be laggy yet so far never where safety is concerned.
As much as I love the car, It’s overpriced now and basically on par with others in its class which cost less and still qualify for grants. I’ll probably get something new next year to take advantage of the grant and absurd resale value. Ioniq 5 or Mustang would be my top pick ATM and definitely will go for the Cybertruck when my number comes up.

I've been driving a NIssan for a couple of years and its awesome. Not as sexy or tech laden as a Tesla but it's a gas to drive (pun intended) and has saved me a ton of $$ on fuel and maintenance. If you can charge at home, it's easy to set up as long as your in a house, condo's and apartments are a problem so far, and drive less than a few hundred KM's a day electric is a no brainer. Full charge every morning when you wake up and lot of other great advantages. It is the best city commuter car I've ever had.

If you don't live in a city with a Tesla dealer / authorised service centre I'd be concerned. Other MFG's like Nissan, Chevy, Ford and Hyundai etc... have a good dealer network, however some smaller shops don't service the electrics because of the investment needed in equipment and staff training. This is getting better however, but be sure to ask the dealer. The biggest problem in most areas is getting a vehicle. I've heard of 2 year waiting lists for the Ionic 5 and the Kia EV6 so order one now if you're on the fence.

EV is awesome but by the time every single driving person has an EV, will the electric grids be able to handle it? So far all I am reading and hearing is this and that about the electric cars. Non so far about wether all these electric grids need to be improved or upgraded in preparation for the future increase in demand.🤔 ICE vehicles will still be with us for a long long time, probably forever, even..

Perhaps countries need to go nuclear power to be able to sustain the demand? That would be the downside.😔

I’m not personally 100% against EV’s but I don’t like how it’s being forced down our throats the way it is.
If an EV works for you then great! Part of me wishes it would work for me!
However…..
-Mining for the battery material is not environmentally friendly.

-Batteries are expensive as shit and can’t be recycled!

-Where fuck are people who park on the streets and live in condos supposed to plug in??

-How is the grid going to handle the load?
I work in residential construction and it’s the same shit! Let’s start banning the use of natural gas and go electric for everything! Electric heat is expensive as shit!

-I drive a full size truck for work plus haul a 24’ travel trailer on vacations, typically go to camp grounds with no hook-ups either.
My brand new 1/2 ton reasonably optioned V8 truck cost me $48k(pre Covid times)not over $100k….fuck off with that shit!
I can’t carry 40 sheets of plywood and all my tools in a Nissan Leaf!

-What is available for a family with 3 or more kids? And don’t say the Model X…..expensive as shit! Vehicles Overall are getting expensive as it is. Especially for a larger family.

-How do you expect that useless wasteful shit you buy at the mall gets there? Large trucks!

-How are the fat pigs in the government going to get into your wallets once they can’t collect tax dollars at the fuel pump? Where is the money to build more bike lanes going to come from?

-Give us a choice not force it! Now you have the manufacturers stopping production of V8 sports cars, Mustang, Camaro and Challenger because of this EV bullshit! I’m sorry but nothing beats the sound of cruising around in a pony car, hearing the V8 roar, ripping through the gears of a MANUAL transmission with 3 pedals. Cue the “but the Tesla plaid can….bla, bla, bla” crowd…….don’t care!

Electric cars are great. Now tell me where the energy to charge the cars will come from. Its fine for now with little number of electric Cars on the road, but what happens when everybody has them.... rolling blackouts like California.....what will we do in a heat wave (can't use the electric Air conditioning) cause all the cars need to charge.

This is a issue that still needs to be addressed now, not 10 years from now... Or at least plan for an expansion of the electrical grid.

Its the old joke about the blonde who buys a new care and calls up the dealer and asks why her car doesn't work anymore..... The salesman forgot to inform her she has to put gas in the tank for the car to continue on....

After over 5 years with my electric here's what I have noticed:

Pros:
Hov
Best car I've driven
Fast
Great updatability - in fact I'd say there are too many software updates recently
Have not needed a service, ever!

Cons:
Tesla is no longer the company it once was. It is now fully in profits mode.

AWD is at a premium - either pony up for more on a model 3 or pony up even more for a model S

Superchargers while sounding great aren't all they're cut out to be. 99.9% of the charging is done at home for me.

If you need to repair an electric - it will cost you through the nose. Being all aluminum and only certain shops certified to work on them, it's a rigged game.

Initial cost is insane. I'm surprised I ever did it.

Vehicle: Tesla

Repeat? Yes when I'm retired and can make sure no one dings my doors and bumpers when I drive it only on the weekends.

I've been driving my Tesla S P100D for two years now and love it! I home charge and it costs me about 30 bucks a month. Never had any problems in winter or on long trips there are Tesla chargers everywhere and I just don't understand anybody who talks about the "grid" like they care and use it as an excuse not to get one???? Ok keep on getting bent over and rammed in the hole by Big Oil then, some fat cat in Texas needs a new keel for his yacht...... I love the fact that it has no belts, hoses, starters, spark plugs, ignition coils, fluids, fuel pumps, water pumps, radiators, mufflers and exhaust and all the other shit I've had to pay to repair in the past.....
Been a great car and they update it almost every night.
CONs: Not everybody can afford this car but I understand there are many affordable models coming down the pipe soon.
