advice on job search needed!

okay first of all lets save the immature jokes for one of In The Bums threads... I seriously would like help/suggestions on finding a new job.

i have given it some thought i decided i want to bartend part time to support myself while i pursue other endeavors. from what i've heard from other bartenders, bartending school is not necessary, all i would need to do is find a job (be it in a restaurant or a club) that will start me of busing and train me as a bartender while i work. but i'm not sure where to look. last thing i want to do is get stuck at another shitty job for 3 years

i've already tried cactus club and earls (though i heard with earls, if you have a penis your pretty much stuck busing for the rest of your life)

anyone have any other suggestions?

sure....I have suggestions. Obviously I will get picked apart but I don't much give a rip. That's the beauty of finding the good job.

First off, and you know this, find something that you "like" to do. Think of the things that you are "slightly" good at and wish to improve on. It doesn't matter the trade, the profession, or the whatever the hell you need to call it. Just sign up with someone you trust and learn it. That "someone" may be called a university, a tech school, or a red seal *insert trade here*.

Either way, plan on spending at LEAST two years doing the things that others might not...do them efficiently...do them effectively...and...BOOM...if you have the wherewithal when that process is done...just open your own business with confidence.

At least that way....you are now doing what you enjoy...and you have no boss other than yourself.

Try your local library

I'm not joking. If you go to the reference desk at your local library (especially if you live in a larger center and have access to the central branch) and ask them for career and job information you'll generally find lots of worthwhile material. An hour spent there will save hours later and may provide some career directions you never even thought of. I know many people who have started their job search there and found it extremely helpful. I'm one of them.

If you have access to the internet from home (I'm guessing that you do since you're on PERB) you may want to find your library's website and start by using the Askaway service. It's an on online reference desk here in BC (other provinces have equivalents, I believe). I use Askaway all the time for different kinds of questions. It almost always saves me time and provides valuable info. You'll probably still need to go to the central branch to get the full range of job search goodies but Askaway is a good place to start.

If you have your heart set on bartending as a part-time job try to get in at one of the clubs as a barporter. Essentually you're the busboy/gopher for the bartenders. Gives you lots of time behind the bar and gives you a chance to learn the ropes. If you can't get in at a club, try for a lounge at one of the hotels. Worked my way through BCIT doing that.

okay so i have dropped off resumes at some popular bars/restaurants (cactus club, earls....so on so forth) are there any other tips that can help me land the job? how often should i check back before i become totally annoying.

again i apologize for my ignorance, but i have no idea how the restaurant industry works, but as a student i think it would be the best job for me right now.
