And what comprises being a Canadian? European is the general answer but where in Europe? Western, (French, German, English) Eastern, (Romania, Slavik, or Russian) or Northern (Swedish, Norwegian, or Danish)? And what about First Nation Canadians? And what influences are on the fathers side? Being "Asian" is not as simply as it sounds either. Korean is different than Chinese, which is not the same as Japanese, which sure isn't East Indian, which is not to be confused with Fijian or Indoneasean or Polynesean.
Sort that all out, if you can. The real question, in my mind, is not CAN we sort all of that out. The question is, why would we want to? What is gained if we can uncover, with any sort of certainty, what the exact ethnic background is of everyone on earth?
I don't think ethnicity does much for us anymore. I guess there are some illnesses which seem to be linked with ethnicity (like Tay Sachs) but beyond that, I am not sure the discussion is very fruitful. In about 300 years, if the human race is still alive, the ethnicities we are so proud of will probably be gone and the human race will have interracially bred itself into a beautiful shade of light, chocolate brown anyway.

This is just a local poll, Vancouver only. From what I see there are mostly caucasian, asian and hindhu. Most people fall into this category still. AND, from what I see, it appears most people are still dating and marrying within their own race, so the idea of one big happy is still a long way off. Anyway, this just seems to be the trend. I mean take a walk around and count how many mixed couples there are versus same race...this goes back to culture blah blah blah weve been down this road before. All I wanted was to get a better idea as to whom I'm speaking with on perb.

"Hindu" is a religion, not an ethnicity. Persons from the Indian sub-continent seem to prefer to be referred to as "South Asian" these days (as opposed to "East Asian"). Both of those regions include a large number of ethnic, language and religious groups.
Knowing a person's ethnicity tells you very little about them, other than some (possibly mistaken) idea of their skin colour.
I kind of like the idea of being anonymous on the internet -- who cares what their ethnic origin is?

I always say that the children who are of two races are a different "animal" altogether - neither one nationality, nor the other. I think that goes for both looks and language; They are CHILDREN!

Racism, at least as I understand it, is discrimination against a group of people based on their ethnic/racial/cultural background. I'm sure someone can look it up for the exact definition.missing link said:
I think pride in one's own country/culture as different in that your not actually using feelings of self-esteem to discriminate against, harm or negatively target another group of people; your're just having positive feelings about your particular background. Certainly, you can have both situations occurring simultaneously and the latter can definitely lead to the former; but, for me, I view them as two separate entities.
In my own experience, I find that racism often seems to arise due to a lack of understanding and communication between groups of persons. Separation seems to be key in this, as the lack of interaction between the targeted people and discrimination group breeds a culture of ignorance in the latter. Rumours and misinformation about the former are more easily fed and spread in the latter thus setting up a "boogey man" complex where the targeted group of people are made up to be less human; their humanity is stripped from them thereby making it easier for harmful and damaging actions to be inflict upon them.
But what do I know. I could just be talking out of my ass.
You can be white/asian/black/brown/red it doesn't matter. When I meet people these days, I don't see their color much anymore. Instead, I walk away thinking.... "they seem like a good respectable person" or "another piece of shit". As for feeling superior, the latter is when I do - and not because I mean to but because so many people manage to lower themselves to that level.Rain Man said:

What's with religion still being in existance. Granted it is a form of brainwashing on the young, and of course it is all about control, fear and ultimately money and power. Religious people are just sheep, used by the powers that be to spread the "word"...weak minded in my opinion. What I don't get is I was brought up surrounded by catholics, but I figured out at a young age that religion..any religion is totally shite. I was under the opinion that most people would come to this conclusion..what with science so obviously rational. I mean, we will soon clone people..they grew a human ear on the back of a rat..how can anyone still have bogus faith of any kind? Science is "god"..evolution..we are primates..you can see it in our features. To think how much of the world, seemingly intelligent people remain religious is freaky, and quite frankly makes me embarassed to be human. "In god we trust" printed on money? "God bless Canada?" It's like were still in the middle ages. We should know better by now.
