If you work for a family business and only family worked there; Do you want a equal share of it, or just take the minimum wage.... If you are not taught about law and what your rights are, people can take advantage of you. The greater good of the family or community... your taught from a young age to be giving...etc.... and young men and women are indoctrinated into the system, when someones bucks it they are kicked out of the business and family, they have poor educational skills because they are taught nothing in order for them to succeed in the modern world. The more ignorant of the world they are, the easier it is to control them.

If it is so great, how many young men stay? Most of the women are encouraged to stay by marrying them off early like at 15 or 16. Not to young men, to older men in their 40's and they will be the 4 th or 5 th wife...

watch the video. lots of documentaries have been done about Bountiful BC....
I agree with you, for the most part....but farm kids in the construction/trade industry are sought after.
We show up for work, and are on time....will stay late to get a job completed, polite and respectful, and may not be book smart, but what we lack, we make up in common sense..
Common sense will get you further sometimes than book smarts.....I am a farm kid, I have grade ten.
Yes I worked very hard to get to the place I am today....and there were times I wished I had more education.
But I'm not living hand to mouth.
The place the young men may be lacking, being raised in that environment is their view on women, and their social skills outside of the commune.
I've known many Dukabors, Huldamen, and Mormon men.....and they do think and act very different....and that's coming from a guy who really doesn't fit in anyplace.

I think one of you pegged it
Master manipulator, and used his type of religion to do it .
They went after him for the wrong reason.
I think rape ,and sexual assault would be more appropriate.
His conveniently getting married to each one in his church .should not mitigate the facts

In the 5th Estate video, alot of the kids don't make it to 10th grade, because they have to go work and support the family. I do believe that the guy has assets in the millions with the property and businesses he owns... and his reasoning for only having the school go to grade 10 is atrocious... go out into the world and get experience and then see if you want to come back to finish your schooling (Grade 12?? school only goes up to grade 10). Once someone is on his own its hard to go back and finish high school, especially the older you get.

What I am trying to say is that in their church, there can be no competition for the females. The lead bull gets all the females and young bulls are run off.....

Most farm kids across Canada will achieve their Grade 12. Why because farmer want their kids to go on to college/university and the kids take farm related professions and/or go to work on other farms/mining/construction etc. Education means higher paying jobs. Not saying education always works that way, but the kids in the church in Bountiful are being limited by their religious system to take advantage of their hard labour, when they complain, they are kicked out.....

You know.... I'd have to agree with you there.
Just don't make the mistake of painting all large family farms ,with the same brush.
These people are a twisted anomaly....which is why they're getting so much media attention.
All farms are considered hard labour, and in BC, they don't fall under the common labour laws.
I'm not sure about now, but in the past, just ten or so years ago.....Farms were exempt from some, not all...but some labour laws, including overtime.

Was only using the Bountiful hard labour connection. I was mostly thinking of their other business like transport etc. not farming.

Should say a lot more about the neglect from government and society at large doing numerous documentaries on Bountilful B.C. that that situation goes on so long abusing children.
