A pornographic movie theatre in Vancouver's eastside neighbourhood may become history following complaints that it attracts sex workers.

The Fox Cinema on Main Street near Kingsway has been screening hard-core pornography for the last 25 years.

Vancouver city hall will consider suspending or revoking its business licence during a public hearing scheduled for next Tuesday. The city's licence department said Thursday that the hearing is quasi-judicial. The department wouldn't give further comment.

Reported on the radio this morn, VPD trolled craigslist for evidence of prostitution & deployed an undercover officer at the theatre :p ..our hardworking city officials & LE at work!

Fight Back

Notice that VVs quote says people are complaining that the theatre is attracting sex workers. Judging by the quote they are not complain about an activity, they are complaining about people who are members of an identifiable group.

If I understand correctly sex work is legal in Canada and sex workers have a right to congregate peacefully in any place or area.

Those who are complaining about sex workers being attracted to some particular area are promoting hatred against an identifiable group and attempting to discriminate against the members of that group.

I have a modest proposal (sounds like a good title for a new thread :) ) , that the definition of "identifiable group" should be expanded to include sexual orientation and occupation. If a petition to that effect went to city council any council member who voted against it would look like a jackass :D .

Personaly I find lunch time clusters of office executives on the streets, in the parks and around convention centres at lunch time to be highly offensive. Perhaps the city should pass a bylaw to deal with these undesireables.

I live quite close to the Fox theatre, and I have to say, I wouldn't be particularly sad to see it go. Not because I have any sort of a problem with it, or because I've noticed any shady activity around it (I don't, and I haven't), just because I can't imagine any circumstances under which I would go there. I mean seriously, with internet porn so plentiful, why would you want to pay to go into a dirty theatre with a bunch of other guys to watch a shitty porno?

Now, having said that, I think it's wrong to try to force this establishment to close based on alleged links to alleged prostitution. Instead, they should leave it alone, and let it die a slow death as it gradually loses customers until it's no longer economically viable.

Heard about this on Channel 11 news at 6pm. Didn't even know that there was a movie theatre that played adult movies.(I'm not from the mainland).
A person went on camera and commented and said he goes to the cofee shop across the street and sits and looks at what goes down there. He said a lot of prositution and a lot of drug activity....

I remember the dress code at my middle school. They were sooooo strict.

No drugs/alcohol signs on clothing, no tang tops, no skin is to be shown above the knees and past the shoulders, no hats, and no cleavage(this would be adress by the teacher because of some shirts). They would ask you to cover up and if you failed to do so you would go home.

Men don't go there to watch shitty pornos with other men. Men go there to cruise for sex with other bi and gay men. They will then suck each other off right there or jerk off for other guys to watch or have other guys jerk them off.
So where are you gonna go now?

A porn theatre would be tons of fun if they weren't just full of men ... I have been to a couple, fuelled by the illogical fantasy of a woman or two joining in the festivities in the audience ...

Unfortunately, no such luck!

If they are going to crack down on that one, what about the one
on Main near Hastings? I was there a few years ago and ladies
were offering and giving BBBJs, guys banging guys, and addicts
doing their drugs. Other guys were just jacking off to everything
that looked good.

I was in there one time with my lady, doing nothing but watching
a film, of course, ahem, and a guy came over to us and offered
to suck me. My girl, knowing that was her job, told him in no
uncertain terms where to go.

@the Meat Market!!!lol
if they close it, it will mean more public sex acts and residual mess outside in the community...near schools etc.

at least it's relatively safe in there for the workers, it's not ideal but fuck man...

they're all like "close the porn theater!!!" next it will be"why are there more workers on the street?""i don't want my children to watch public sex acts!"

when will people learn?

i agree with treveller, we should try become acknowledged as a distinct culture or identifiable group for the purposes of pushing our human rights.

on tv they said they mostly saw men masturbating men? so i don't even know how sex workers got drawn in? male hustlers i guess?

anyhoo, this is fucked and will harm the workers on the street for sure...

I thought I read that they did close that one... In fact, I thought that was supposed to be one of the reasons why all this activity is supposedly going on now at the Fox theatre, because it just moved from the one near Hastings.
