Initially, I was against him, his antics (ie. stick waving @ Brodeur), his comments, but you know what? If the NHL only had to worry about guys like him, and instead of the cheap shots, head shots, hits from behind, well, the NHL & NHLPA would be so happy dealing w/ twerps like Avery, instead of the Bertuzzis, McSorleys, Marchments, Downeys, etc.

I'm not condoning what he said; but think about it, it's 'only' 'words', not actions like cross-checking some player in a vulnerable position into the boards.

The NHL should be suspending on those actions, forget about what a mouth does.

Unless she's sucking my good cock ;):p

Thats what I thought, I thought wow how crazy to ban some one over something they say. Isn't this hockey where you can knock someones teeth out and go on to skate another day? What he said wasn't that what any guy would say about someone being with his ex:confused:
I'm falling for you, we think so alike! ;)

I never thought i'd say this, but I agree with Bjhunter :D

It was innuendo, not anything racist or graphically offensive.

I am always happy to see Sean Avery get suspended, he's an asshole.
However, I don't think what he said, on it's own, was enough for a suspension. I think the fact that he sought out a Canadian crew, asked them to turn on their camera, said his one-liner then walked away was totally classless and a cry for attention from a childish little punk. That, combined with his history of douchebag behavior is why Bettman is smacking him.
If a reporter had asked him about Cuthbert, and he said the same thing, it would be different, but he went out of his way to take it public.

These players are not paid well, "Soley" on their talent. They are employees of a company, are in (and governed by the rules of) a union and are ambassadors of their sport. If Avery was not a member of the NHL, he would not garner media interest. As he does garner interest BECAUSE he is a member of the NHL, his on AND off ice conduct is a reflection of his sport. When he acts inappropriately, his behaviour reflects on all professional hockey players. After all of the drugged out, steroid abusing, night club brawling, raping and sick NFL players making the news, look at public perception of professional football players.

Avery used his NHL celebrity to gain media attention and used that media attention inappropriately. In turn, he is justifiably paying the price.

The biggest indictment of what Avery did was the reaction of his teammates. Turco called him a circus and Modano talked about "hanging them up" if Avery was still on the team. No one in the Dallas Star organization came to his defense. Have fun in AHL Avery because that is where your heading when your suspension is done.

Concur with Moose. Avery is a drain on everyone around him. His teammates, coaches, management, the league. If one of the league's star players said what Avery did, it would have probably got limited attention. But this is the league's most hated player.

Personally, I feel no sympathy for Avery. He turtles after all of his bravado and antics; that's unethical! Last night TSN aired his written apology for his "sloppy seconds" remark. Fuck, that was some pretty eleoquent shit; you know he didn't write that, probably his publicist.

I don't think he'll get that big of a suspension but sounds like his days with Dallas are numbered. As long as he doesn't end up in Van, that's fine with me. And if he ends up in the East Coast again, the less we see of him, the better.

It's one thing to say those things on the ice, most guys would brush it off as being caught up in the moment and think nothing of it. But what Avery did was pre-meditated - he sought out the media to say those things.

And what do you think would have happened if the NHL didn't suspend him? You don't think Phaneuf or any of the Flames would've taken a run at him? The NHL does not need another Steve Moore incident.

I think the NHL got it right for once. Can you tell I'm not a big Avery fan?:)

you answered your own question...

if he was referring to your Mother, wife or daughter I presume you would find it offensive, maybe even graphically offensive...

perhaps it was just derogatory...

besides, it was so orchestrated...

and the media just loves it...

he'd be a media darling in Vancouver, a real "character"...

me personally, I think his "act" has grown tired and I'd love to see his butt run out of the league...

I think it's called attention deficit disorder, and as long as he knows he has the media following him around like retarded puppy dogs the beat will go on...

I think he would be a perfect fit in Vancouver...

BTW, who is Johnny Bauer...

Crime does not fit the punnishment

I mean really, it is the NHL, not an elementary school. There was an opportunity to actually get some people to tune into a mean nothing game for anyone outside Calgary or Dallas.

They are on TV for the entertainment value. The more the entertainment, the more we are involved in the stories, the more we watch.

Make a token effort and fine him $1000 and let him play.

I am not a huge Avery fan and would not want him on our team, but he is good for a sound bite.

Avery's the 'teabag' of the NHL....

I don't condone what he did either, but that would've been an average remark coming from an NBA or NFL player. Avery won't get any sympathy or reinstatement from anyone though, especially when his teammates were so quick to abandon him

NHL's overreacting a bit. Fear of alienating their female fan base is what I think this amounts to in the end

The big mistake Avery made was embarrassing the league. As some players have stated, they've heard much worse down on the ice when they are yapping at each other, but that's where that type of talk should have stayed.

So it wasn't so much what he said that's created a problem, rather it's the venue in which he said it in, namely over the air, that's caussed all his problems.

After re-reading my post, I still don't know what "question" you are referring to. I'm pretty sure I didn't ask any questions, I just shared my opinion.

.
Offensive certainly, but coming from anyone else, in the context that I described, not suspension worthy.

BTW, who is Johnny Bauer...
My bad... I meant Johnny Bower.

the question posed in the original post...

"Avery; was it that bad???"
"I never thought i'd say this, but I agree with Bjhunter"
"his history of douchebag behavior is why Bettman is smacking him."
douchebag behaviour seems to be as good a reason as any...

"Offensive certainly, but coming from anyone else, in the context that I described, not suspension worthy."
I think it would depend on whether anyone else had a history of douchebag behaviour...

I mean if you can't suspend an employee on the basis of a history of douchebag behaviour, than when can you...

I presume that had the NHL not suspended Avery, the Dallas Stars would have been within their rights to do so...

"My bad... I meant Johnny Bower."
just giving you a hard time;) ...

Gotcha!
I was never disputing whether or not Avery should be suspended for what happened. As I mentioned, the way he went out of his way to publicize it and his history as a tool, are worthy of a suspension.

My point was that his comments alone were not that bad, if said in a different context.

Personally I would love to see him sit for a long time, and hope the Stars are searching his contract for an out-clause that will let them tear it up based on his behavior.

What Avery did is baffling!!! He sought out the media, gathered them around to say that???? Based on what I've heard about him from accounts from the Stars locker room, he walks around like he's Joe Hollywood. The sad thing is that Avery is a reasonably skilled player and the league's best agitator and could potentially be of use to Canada at the international level, if he smartens up. He seems to have deep issues, stemming for some unfulfilled need for ayttention he didn't get as a child or something. All these media incidents are him acting out.
