The Canadian dollar topped 94 cents US on Friday, as another well-known economist forecast the loonie is on its way to parity with the U.S. greenback.

The loonie was trading Friday morning at 94.21 cents US, up 0.70 of a cent from Thursday's close. The loonie has not been in its current range since late July 1977.

Solid Canadian economic growth and a rise in interest rates will push the loonie to parity with the U.S. dollar by the end of the year, CIBC World Markets chief economist Jeff Rubin said Friday.

Rubin said the dollar will be at par at least into early 2008.

"Between red-hot commodity and energy markets and huge capital inflows associated with an avalanche of [merger and acquisition] deals, the Canadian currency has plenty of octane left to take a concerted run toward parity against the greenback and hold it into at least the first quarter of 2008," said Rubin, who is also chief strategist at CIBC World Markets.

National Bank Financial chief economist Clement Gignac has also predicted the loonie will hit parity with the U.S. currency, but doesn't think that will happen for another 12 to 18 months.

I predict we'll see a lot less SPs doing road trips to the U.S.A., and less cross-border pooning trips by Americans.

even though its at 94, good luck getting anywhere near that on
any exhange rate ... particularly though those rip-off bastards
at the credit card companies!

I guess exhorbitant interest rates aren't good enough,
the need to squeeze another few points from the exchange rate.

The only 'good' news is if you are importing stuff from the US
it is finally reasonably priced ...

You can now buy a decked out Harley for less than a Honda!

I did not expect to have to explain it to anybody, but, wrong again. Story of my life.

3 years ago, I would go to Vancouver Buillion, Broadway and Granville, put $100USD on the counter and get back $162CDN. Today my $100 would only fetch me $105CDN.

If this does not help, sorry.

It is a terrible view from my angle, but it will not stop me from doing what I enjoy, i.e., seeing ladies like you.

Here's an idea for an enterprising Vancouver SP: Offer special deals to Americans who pay in USD, if only to take the sting out of the exchange rate. The way the rate is now it will sure affect tourism on your side of the border.

But, trying not to sound like an ugly American, we have had it sooo good for so long, who's to complain?

i am in montreal now let me tell you american are sweet in here.. and we have a lots more europeen in here then bc could ever imagine.. because in here is much more cultural and friendly then vancouver dont get me wrong i had full of fun and money in bc.
if you look at the euro today is not bad or the money from England too.

i think in canada Sp is more cheaper then usa. because overthere is illegal sort of.. i got problem in the boder because i had forgot to remove escort business card. since i have a little something because of your policy they make a suck of big deal with it..they have to face this prostitution had been going for age. the law should be there only to protect children from it that all and that is my point of view.

sorry if my english is not perfect for some in here.. i speak more then 3 language including sex ;p

It's all cyclical

I generate about 10-20% of my income from contract work in the US, and it was nice when I got paid in US$$ and the Canadian $$ was worth 65 cents... was a nice little raise for the work that I did. Now my percentage of income from the US is about 5%...

Oh well... it's all cyclical. At least now when I travel down to the US for travel, my Canadian dollars are easier to exchange.

I like to fish in Canada. 6 years ago it was 1800us for 2 people in a 25' cabin cruiser and a guide for 3 days. Now it is twice that. The owner of the resort said he only raised US rates due to the dollar. Since we put that idiot in the white house it is getting hard to fish in Canada. I will never forgive him. 18 more months of that moron. I dont think we'll make it.

You really think the policy will change for bothside American and Canada in the next 18 months? if it the case it could be great to gain my right again to travel in the us and you to canada.
