Still lost in the '60s
I am often surprised and saddened when I hear reprehensibles in the Excited States pronouncing "progressive" and "liberal" as if they were epithets.
The words are not slang, but they have very different definitions depending on geography.

Yeah, it's pretty funny how American conservatives have made it into a dirty word to denigrate people with, and then use it's definition for themselves. Liberty, individual rights and small government are all hallmarks of liberalism, but talk to a conservative and they'll swear up and down that's what conservatism is, and that liberalism is just socialism. The same people who will go around shouting about how it's not democracy, it's republicanism! 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

10 years ago I had the same type of conversation with an American friend of a friend about the difference between communism, socialism, national socialism, liberalism, anarchism , etc . After 2 hours i had to pull my phone and Google the political system chart to show him where each system stands vs each other .

Because socialism was so bad in his mind that i had to ask Sweden good or bad people, Norway good or bad , etc as everything in his mind was linked to a Venezuela type of system. Sad that they lack the basic knowledge that would allow them to understand the historical and geopolitical issues without too much biases or at least a certain comprehension.

The average american do not see what Eisenhower was talking about in 1959 turned out to come to past ; adding to that their healthcare system that feeds on government money at 70% but is redistributed unevenly to the people that pay the bill or get some kind of coverage or half or not at all . Its Socialist system to the corporations instead to go to the people directly.
