my best valentine’s day memory is with my teenage sweetheart. he had been afraid to say “i love you” which i was cool with, but i had a suspicion he would say it this day.

he had set up a whole treasure hunt for me, with cute clues leading to stores we frequented. he’d spoken to staff and servers so he could hide stuff in them. I was lead to meaningful spots to us in the city, beautiful spots I hadn’t seen, etc. each spot had candies and cute gifts, and it finally lead back to his room in his mom’s house. under the mattress, it said “turn around”. i did, and he lifted up his shirt to reveal that he’d written “I LOVE YOU” in sharpie on his chest.

what a guy. he was a good one. sadly, we lost him to cancer about 4 years ago. we had broken up about 3 years after that valentine’s, but always remained friendly. i'll always have a piece of my heart set aside for him, and the kindness he showed me.

your turn!

I don't have a Valentine's story of this type and your's Ms Beckett, is very sweet. But I do have a significant Valentine's Day memory, actually a bit of a life moment if I really put it in perspective.

As I recall it was 1978, Edmonton, brutal winter, even for Alberta, like consistent -35 or colder with a wind for what seemed like months. I'd met this girl mid January, friend of friends thing and had seen her again, once more amongst friends but really wanted to ask her out. She finally agreed to a date on Valentine's Day. I was pumped and the more pumped I got, it seemed the colder the temperature got. Anyway I'm all showered up etc and I head into my then new 77 Ford Chateau Van figured I would fire it up (and it was plugged in) to warm it up well in advance of heading out to pick her up. Temp was probably around -40 and at that temperature it doesn't matter if its F or C its f-g cold. Nothing. I mean not even a burp from the starter. I am thinking 'oh no', panic setting in, then figured well hold on, my room mate had given me the keys to his Fiat 124 Sport Coupe as he was away, so I hopped in and fired it up, started just like it was a summer day. And I am thinking hot damn. Warmed it up then put it in gear, nothing. Clutch was frozen and I am thinking oh FFS. Booster cables wouldn't reach. Called for a cab, nothing for hours, it was Valentines day after all. And then I snapped. At that moment I knew I had had it with Alberta winters and my mission from that moment on was to move somewhere you wouldn't die due to winter. It was a driving force and in the fall of '79 I got the job based in Vancouver, moved and have been a Vancouverite since. Still some Alberta in the boy but I can say this, fuck those winters. And I never did get together with that gal either ...

My Valentine's Day story happened nearly ten years ago to the day (as of this post). It was my first with my girlfriend at the time, and I was nervous about it all day. We made plans to go for dinner at a German restaurant (they had an accordian player perform for the diners), and I had a couple of small gifts for her afterward. When she saw the rose in a red vase with a teddy bear hanging on, she smiled and began to kiss me. It turned into an hour long smooch fest with the two of us eventually falling asleep in each other's arms. Eventually, we woke up and I had to take her home. Even to this day, I fondly remember that night as it was my first true attempt at making Valentine's Day special for somebody I loved, to great success.

I remember my first Valentine's Day, I was in grade 7 LOL! I had been seeing a boy for a whole month :ROFLMAO: Of course that was a big deal back then. He brought me a teddy bear, with a heart attached to it. Turns out the teddy bear was stolen from his sisters room:oops: I guess its the thought that counts LOL but man oh man was she pissed! I'll never forget that memory.
