But ya, absolutely heartbreaking and scary news. Just horrible. I am grateful to be a Canadian and I have never touched a gun. But I can only imagine I would own a gun and get some training with it if I ever lived in the US. It's a scary place where incidents like this happen way too often and innocent people are left undefended. I know there was that massage parlour attack in Toronto with a machete, but fortunately these mass attacks happen way less in Canada with the gun culture here compared to the US.

These things always make me wonder....did nobody notice or care that this guy was going off the rails in an extreme way? Maybe if someone just reached out or listened then this horrible tragedy could have been stopped. Gun culture certainly needs an overhaul in the USA, but I think attacking the stigma and mystery surrounding mental health could be more beneficial. We are becoming more aware in Canada with a long road ahead, but the US is far behind in this aspect as well.

I think "gun culture" is just short for the American obsession with the second amendment, and the comparatively casual nature of the topic. Guns are for sure a big part of the American history, so it'll need time.
Not sure how "blaming the inanimate object" is different from what you are suggesting (gun control for "the crazies" is still gun control). And hard disagree on "almost as easily killed them with a framing hammer".

We see anti Asian abuse all over twitter- people yelling slurs at anyone asian. This was bound to happen with idiots worshipping a psychopath.
We have fewer gun deaths per capita here than the states because we have stricter gun laws. That in itself is proof that guns are the problem, not “crazies”. You can’t just brush this off and blame it on mental illness.

The stupidity of your points is annoying. first of all. America is "gun culture". Their history is built on guns. Their movies wouldn't have a plot without guns. A 155 millimeter Howitzer is an inanimate object until somebody uses it. Death by framing hammer is fairly rare in the USA. Partly because it is much easier to kill with a gun. Whereas almost 20 thousand Americans died by gun violence last year in the US. Because some stupid human came and picked one up. In spite of the second amendment. People really have proven they don't have the right to bear arms. They shouldn't be in the hands of civilians.

Ease of access to guns makes it more likely some young guy who is willing to throw his life away, can get his hands on one. He could obtain one illegally, but he'd have to put in much more effort. Guns allow someone on a rampage to go and kill many more people at one time as opposed to if they had their hands on a hammer or some other weapon. That AR-15 rifle has almost no other real use by any civilian other than to give someone the ability to murder large numbers of people at one time.
