That's an interesting read. I guess one could call it the Swiss Army Knife tool in the kitchen.

I see there is a WiFi version too. That would be useful IMO.

Lol this is just a rice cooker all Chinese families use that is repackaged and rebranded for a western audience.

It is a marketing and branding success. But it's a small drop in the pool compared to the hundreds of millions of units sold and owned by Japanese (who invented them), Koreans and Chinese.

If they are made like the originals, they should last 10 plus years which is great for the consumer but not so much for the manufacturer (a lot of rice cooker selling companies remain small for that reason) I just don't know enough people will get use out of them as I don't know a whole lot of my Canadian/European friends who pressure cook their foods often, unlike east Asians who can't live without it.

But people love consumerism. Still, I'm proud that the brand is now a well known Canadian brand.

... pressure cookers are very common in western Europe where people make stews and soups with them. I just got one of these and I appreciate making a beef stew in less than 30 minutes opposed to 3hrs Haha

Canadians or those from wealthier parts of Europe who may not have grown up making stews with the cheapest cuts of meat that require to be cooked for longer to be edible, most likely dont see the need for a pressure cooker.

But this 10in1 isn't really as convenient for people who want to cook individual items, indeed if what you were cooking was steak, fries and rice for dinner with a side salad or steamed veggies, you'd still need to bring out the pots and pans and what not.

The WiFi model never gained popularity. I don't see much value in a finer control, since you cannot taste the food & adjust when the pressure is on. It is not practical to switch the pressure off/on for that. The appeal of the appliance is that you can turn it on and forget about it. The downside is getting the mix right before the pressure is on, and no easy adjustments after.

On the upside, excellent blending of flavours when cooking soups or stews. I can also cook many dishes that would take too much time without a pressure cooker.

I got my InstantPot on Amazon over two years ago, and bought some for relatives later as well. The best prices recently were during Black Friday sale at regular stores (Canadian Tire, Best Buy). Amazon prices didn't go that low.

Sort of like saying the computer is just an abacus, every Chinese family had them thousands of years ago.
Canadian Maple Syrup is sold and marketed in China as medicine to increase male potency in sexual encounters.

Tell me cultural appropriation isn't funny, just a little bit.

The one I use is a Breville that can sear, pressure cook and slow cook. It really is an all purpose cooker.

Getting a smoked meat from the butcher and pressure cooking it to perfection makes an amazing meal.

I got it years ago on points and I use it much more than my regular oven/stovetop.

If it had Wifi and I could control via an App, I'd definitely use it. The slow cook times are 4 and 6 hours. I like to have it cook 8 hours with tougher meats.

if it has an auto on feature (or mechanical switches) you can try a wifi smart plug.

What Instant Pot brings to the table is innovation, just like Apple. Sony was the first to market with a portable music player - the Walkman. They dominated the market for years. They should have secured the next step in the evolution but Apple seized the initiative with the Ipod. Same concept but innovation won the day.
